    Has anyone purchased the GR parts such as the performance damper or door stabilizer? On the GR parts PDF, it says that they're limited to Japanese Katashiki which I believe means product type, so model?

    This was my first 'mod' as the center console material and padding kind of sucks.

    curious, did you ever end up installing this illumination part? I find the interior lighting to be lacking at night and interested to see how this works/functions and if installation was a PIA. Thanks!

    Not the person but I debated doing the install and felt lazy so I got this instead:

    USB-C light, a few dollars from China or 10 ish on Amazon. It has multiple colors you can set, you can set brightness level and it remembers the last color/brightness selected. Mine is red to match the rest and medium intensity. Pic was taken during the day.

    If you search "USB-C light" you'll get a bunch of results but they all seem to be the same at different price points.

    This will possibly(probably) be a waste of money, but I found out BlackHawk Japan had the GR Performance Damper on a decent sale with affordable shipping(compared to when I looked at it last year), so I made an impulse purchase.

    TRD GR PERFORMANCE DAMPER SET FOR TOYOTA PRIUS ZVW60 ZVW65 MXWH60 MXWH65 MS303-47004 - Black Hawk Japan

    It's currently on its way and just entered the country. I've got an oil change appt scheduled for Friday when I'll be on my way to Chicago for the CarCareNut meetup on Saturday. If it gets here by Thursday, I might ask if they can fit the install in, but I doubt the timing will work. The main bottom engine cover and rear bumper both need to come off to install the kit, and it also needs a four post lift because the weight of the car needs to be on the tires when the bolts are torqued. So the install will probably have to wait until the rear door recall is ready in a couple/few weeks.

    Cool, The CCN. Getting some service from the Car Care Nut is on my Prius wish-list. In fact, maybe I should set an appt sooner than later as I understand he can be booked up way in advance.

    Yeah. My plan had always been to use the performance damper install as an excuse to drive to Chicago and have them work on the car. But then the price of the kit and shipping were so high that I viewed it more as a daydream. But then he announced the meetup and I decided to just do that instead. But then I saw the sale and low shipping cost. But there was no time to schedule work at TCCN as they're typically booked out a couple months and I don't really want to drive there and back twice(it's about 10hr each direction).

    So I'm going to the meetup but having the damper installed locally. Only way I'll change my mind if he likes the mods I've already done and wants to do a video on the car. I put the odds of that at around 0.0005%, so I think I'm safe. lol

    Rear install is NOT straightforward. I'm annoyed at my dealership as I'm typing this for not keeping me updated on this as they were working on it. It's taken them WAY longer than I'm going to be comfortable paying because the tech spent so long making mods to make it work. If I had known what he was going to end up doing, I would have done the stuff myself and just had it brought in to properly torque everything down. I might change dealerships because of this.


    The situation:
    The front damper is a straight bolt on. No additional mods necessary.

    The rear damper is a completely different story. It's supposed to mount to the same area the rear bumper mounts to. (This is the actual aluminum bumper, not the plastic bumper cover.) But the US bumper is larger than the Japanese bumper. So the mounting points are covered up by the US bumper. There's also a bulge in the bumper mounting plate that interferes with the damper brace.

    When the tech discovered this, they brought me in to approve a mod to the brace to remove a little material to make it work. I was okay with that since it should have only taken a few minutes at a grinder, then a little black paint to cover the ground area to prevent rust. But they went much further than that. In order to get the bumper back on, the tech notched the corners off the bumper.

    I'm annoyed because they never informed me they were going to do that, it took far longer than it should have, and I could have done a better/more elegant job if I had known it needed doing. Instead of notching, I would have drilled a hole through the bumper to be able to access the bolt location. There are other spots on the bumper where Toyota did the same thing. As soon as he pulled the bumper cover off and saw the whole area was different on the US version, they should have called me back to look at it and make decisions; including maybe stopping the install right there.

    Notice how the bumper doesn't need to be removed to access the mounting points.


    Here is a photo from today with the bumper removed and the bracket placed against the mounting point. The bumper mount has that lower bulge that interferes. I agreed that they could remove some material from the middle of the brace to make it clear. Would have taken me less than 15 min for both. I might have even paused the install and taken the braces to a welding shop to add some material to the bottom to reinforce the area.

    But this is the part that's bothering me. Here's a photo showing one of the corners of the bumper that was notched out. If I had done the job, I would have grabbed the appropriately sized hole saw and drilled a hole in the back side of the bumper to allow for clearance for the head of the bolt.

    I'm probably anal enough about stuff like this that it's going to bug me to the point I'll buy a salvage bumper and redo the work myself.

    If only he had called me back to the shop(I was in the waiting room all day) when he realized the installation instructions didn't match what was on the car and the bumper was going to obstruct the mounting. I probably would have stopped that part of the job anyway to do it myself. So now I'm out money, he's out money(because of the way techs are paid at dealerships), and the dealership may have lost money because I'm not likely to return. Just a lose-lose-lose for no good reason.

    Sorry. I'm still obviously worked up about it(finally finished at the dealership about an hour ago).
