Possible Battery Problem. Any Experience with Lazarus Reconditioning on Long Island?

    I don't have DIY knoweldge

    Twice in the last two weeks, I started my Prius and the dashboard lit up but it wouldn’t go into drive or reverse. All the extra lights remained on (check engine etc.) Both times, I tried over and over and it wouldn’t shift. Then walked away for a couple hours, tried again and it worked. It’s different from other times I’ve had battery issues so I’m concerned it might be the hybrid battery starting to go. Is that what happens…or what else could it be? I have many miles on this girl.     Get the smaller battery, next to the traction battery checked out first. If that's low, it'll throw a lot of senseless codes.
    If you can buy a friend lunch to remove the battery and take it to any automotive parts store for a free test. I believe that one is in the back passenger side trunk area or under the rear seat.

    rear right corner under the hatch floor. get a free load test at many auto parts stores.

    You mean to test the hybrid battery? Maybe I will take it to Autozone and ask them to check both...

    This is not about your hybrid battery.

    The 12vdc battery powers all computers. When it dies you can not go into READY.

    Don't waste your time at autozone, they don't know anything about hybrid batteries,
    or testing a Prius 12v battery.
    How old is the 12v battery? Do you have a battery charger? If it's 5 amps or less,
    charge the 12v battery for 4-8 hours. Then remove the charger and wait an hour,
    check the voltage. It should be at least 12.5 volts, if i'ts lower, it's time to replace it.
    Then charge it for 8 hours to give it a full charge, before installing it.

    It the 12v battery is weak, computers cannot start properly and the hybrid system
    will not activate correctly giving you errors.

    If you have warning lights on the dash, you need to have the trouble codes read with an OBD2 scan tool. You can purchase one yourself or have someone else do it like an auto parts store or mechanic or a friend.

    I would be very happy to learn that it was not about the hybrid battery, but I did just take it to autozone to have the regular battery checked and they said that one is fine and that it is probably the hybrid. They said the hybrid is what controlls it going into drive and reverse and if it is starting without being able to shift or go into READY, it sounds like it's the hybrid battery. I realize they probably don't know much more about hybrids than I do. Nor does my local mechanic, who I stopped by to see afterward. He said hybrid battery's are the cost of another but to bring it by in the morning and he'll let it "get hot" and see if he can tell if it's anything other than the hybrid battery.

    I don't know if the hybrid battery has every been changed. I bought it used with lots of miles already on it in 2019 and have not replaced the hybrid battery.

    Apologies in advance for my knowledge being so limited. I don't know what is referred to as a battery charger in this case. I did download the Dr Prius app after looking through messages here, but I don't understand what it does or how to make it work (it's asking for OBD bluetooth low energy adapter)?

    I'm stressed because I really need this car and can't afford to spend 5 or 6 grand replacing the hybrid battery. I would appreciate any sound advice.

    I don't even know what is referred to by the 12v battery. Is that the hybrid battery? I also don't know what you mean by a battery charger in this case. Forgive my ignorance. Autozone said the regular battery is fine so it must be the hybrid (or 12v battery?).

    If I have to replace the hybrid battery, can I do it through ebay to save money? Or is that a terrible idea? I can't afford a five thousand dollar repair.

    Well, you need to get a code reader, and find out what the codes are. That will point you in the
    right direction on what the problem is. The "check hybrid" display can come up for several reasons
    that are not releated to the actual hybrid battery. That is the 200+volt battery that helps drive the car.
    The 12volt is the low voltage battery that powers up the computers and if all is correct, will allow the
    hybrid system to start.
    The 12volt battery works pretty much the same way is a non hybrid car. But it does NOT turn the motor
    over to start the car, the hybrid battery does that.
    If the 12v battery is weak, all kinds of hybrid issue will arise, that likely aren't an issue, once you have a healthy
    12v battery.
    That's why everyone asks how old the 12v battery is. So, how old is it? Since you purchased the car in 2019,
    5 years ago, the 12v battery is likely getting old and weak. MAYBE, a 5amp or less AGM charger can be used
    to charge the battery for several hours and may be healthy enough get your car going.
    It's likely older. If you remove the covers in the trunk, and the cover over the 12v battery on the passenger rear side,
    you can hopefully see a date sticker on the battery.
    All that doesn't mean the hybrid battery is okay, but it's best to eliminate the simplist this first. And least expensive.

    Autozone does NOT know how to check the battery for the Prius, they do not! You MIGHT get lucky and someone
    MIGHT understand, but doubtful. They just do a regular load test.

    Go to Toyota and get the Toyota battery for your car. Then CHARGE it! The batteries sit on a shelve and they do
    NOT charge them. They slowly discharge over time and likely will be weak. Get a $10-15 Volt-Ohm-Meter and
    check the voltage on the 12v battery. You can go to walfart and meter and get a 4 amp AGM charger for about $30-40.
    After charging the battery for at least 4 hours, 6-8 would be better, remove the charger, wait 15 minutes or so and
    check the voltage. It will be higher.
    If the battery is 12.5 or less, it's weak. After charging, it will likely be 12.8 or above.
    Reading your first post, it sounds like the 12v battery if old and weak and should be replaced.

    You first need to determine what the trouble codes are for your car. Do NOT guess what the problem is until you have all the trouble codes! Read post #8 & 9.

    No. Your hybrid battery is 99% sure to be better than a junkyard one off of eBay.

    Many Toyota dealers sell new for $2000 if you have someone to install. Some used batteries are slightly improved by rebuilders to last a year or two. For maybe $1800. A new one will last more than ten years.

    Autozone is probably the worst place for hybrid advice. They often know less than nothing when they give bad advice.

    Sometimes you can do a little shopping and call shops that advertise (Google it) hybrid repair. Often they are small shops that don’t look like much but they know Toyota hybrids.

    This guy is a one man show near me working in old gas station with a lift. Do you notice anything about his parking lot? Quality at half the price has them lining up.

    In your case I would get the car to a Toyota dealer (assuming you can’t find an independent specialist) and pay $200 for a diagnostic. Be prepared to retrieve the car if it’s not something simple. Then report back.

    I fear for you if by Brooklyn you're in the downstate area, not that update is much better, but finding an inexpensive shop with decent quality isn't going to be easy.
    I ask if you're downstate because lately I'm noticing there are brooklyns in almost every state these days.
    I did a search using "toyota hybrid repair specialist in the brooklyn ny area"
    Kinda slim pickins but I'll post some links anyways, not that I'd recommend one over another ....

    This is very helpful, thank you. I am in Brooklyn, where yes, it's too expensive. I also have a tiny cabin upstate and an appointment up there for Tuesday but I'm going to use this information to make sure it's the best place to take it.

    It seems to be where all the taxi drivers take their hybrids.

    2011 Prius has twice this month started up but refused to go into drive or reverse. Not sure if its the hybrid battery or something else. Through all the obsessive googling, it seems possible it could be the inverter, whatever that is. I'm thinking of driving it to Lazarus in Long Island City because they say they diagnose for free and replace the batteries for $1000. Makes me a little nervous, as does the fact that the business seems to have more than one name. I found one positive review on here, but wondering if anyone else has opinions, thanks.
