Let's see. A 2007 Camry started at $20k, and the 2016 was at $23k. Not $3800, but close. In addition to better fuel economy, the 2016 also has better safety features, and likely more standard features on the base trim. Then we adjust for inflation, and see the model's price hasn't actually changed over that time period.

So the Heritage Foundation report is way off. They probably conflated the cost of a hybrid system as a requirement for the regulations, when it wasn't. That would increase prices as they predict, but a hybrid improves fuel economy enough that the higher price would most likely be covered by lower fuel prices over a typical ownership period.

If HF was really concerned about affordability of goods for the typical American, they would be pushing policies to address wage stagnation, but they don't.

The MSRP of the 150 mile one now starts under $29k. Your Bolt was a better deal.

When they came out, they were over $33k. Adjust for inflation, and that is around the price of a Model Y or bZ4X. I don't know when it moved into the inexpensive range for a BEV, but the Bolt and others were also on the market by then.

If the rich don't buy a new EV, then there won't be used ones for the poor.

That's what I meant, but I don't think that came across, so thanks for the clarification.

that used EV - once it's 2 to 4yrs old, now sells for $2,800 to $18,000 turning on mileage, &/or whether it's a leaf, kia, i-MiEV, VW etc.
Just consider all the older Teslas under $10,000

Ya, but as of now there are good reasons those can be so cheap, at least seeing it through my eyes.
    • The used Leaf I got once was good for around town, which is why I might get another, that is, an old Leaf for around town.
    • I don't know much about other EVs as far as repairability goes, but at least in my area getting the Leaf worked on was pretty much impossible. The only Nissan dealer within a couple hundred miles even refused to make a spare key for me.
    • The Teslas that I've gotten insurance quotes for cost a lot more to insure, at least for me. An old Model S would be some $400 per month.

ev repair is still an issue, but so is hybrid repair. maybe another government nudge?

EV repair is in its infancy. A screen, which controls everything, is $10k or more, a HV battery; 2-3 times more.

Hybrid repair is mature. A new HV battery can be had for $3-5K. The car will not die if the screen is bricked in most all cases.

those are both generalizations taken from what you may have read, or experienced.
but on the whole mostly incorrect. you don't have to spend a long time on prius chat to understand that finding an indy mechanic to do anything beyond the most rudimentary service and repairs is quite difficult in most areas.
ev repair is similar but yes, not as common as hybrid yet, due to starting later. many ev's have the same price repairs as hybrids, whether it is a screen, a brake actuator or an a/c compressor.
the battery is considerably more based on size, just like the prius prime or rav4 are more than the pure hybrid.
fortunately, batteries are not an issue.

You haven't explored the repair issues with current ICE only cars.

Another tax gift besides ev rebate is the $500,000 tax credit for a couple who live in a house two years. I’ve seen multiple house flippers getting this gift. They stay exactly two years and on the market it goes.

Peace through surrender was tried in 1939.

Need we try it again with the same likely results.

Currently, no US troops are fighting in the current European War.

What do we think will happen this time?

it's funny how people use tax administration like they do their politics. if it's not benefitting them (that they are aware of, which is a big part of the problem) that it isn't right. and let me use the poor to prove my point.

I think a right to repair law would help with it, and for beyond EVs and cars.

One of the issues is that the automakers have locked up the system data in their EVs. If they let an independent shop take a peak, the shop likely has to pay out high fees to do. The OBD II standard has cars with an engine using a universal set a trouble codes that cover the core systems needed for the car to run. We now have cheap, third party ways of reading those codes, so even owners comfortable with wrenching can do the repair.

Don't think there is an equivalent for EVs. Having that with a law preventing the manufacturer from barring an owner from doing the repair, will help expand EV repair options. Such should also help with insurance rates.

Agreed, but none of that explains the reluctance of indies to work on hybrids

Could simply be cause no experience or training for working with high voltages. Doing so should give a sane person pause. Then they may not be hurting for work. The local shop around the corner as a three week waiting period for appointments.

To work on new tech also requires making the investment in new equipment and training. That's why not every body shop can repair carbon fiber and aluminum parts. It was the same when high strength steel became more prevalent in cars.

And so we make the case that bevs, hevs, and phevs are almost equal in the difficulty of finding independent shops to be worked on

That's why the non-PHEV hybrid has become the main vehicle of choice for a lot of drivers.

I thought that was a one time per couple tax exemption for an occupied house.
