Featured Volkswagen is going with solid state!?

    I think this agreement is mainly to pump up the valuation of quantumscape's stock. VW is a major stock holder, and if these work both companies will profit. The pilot line is scheduled to begin mass production in 2027, but this will be relatively low volume. Note 2027 is also the year toyota says they will sell a vehicle with their own solid state batteries. If these work well and prices are low enough then PowerCo will build manufacturing capacity. There are no timelines or commitment on VWs part to build or use these batteries, but with their partial ownership of quantum scape they likely will if they perform well enough and cost low enough. Tests with the prototype batteries went well.

    I hope they are successful. If they are I would not expect that gigafactory to start high volume production of solid state batteries until 2031. In the meantime I expect Lithium Iron Phosphate to grow in market share and prices to continue to fall.

    my guess is if this 40GWh factory starts volume earlier it will be using quanumscape's semi solid tech, not all solid state. This is different than the gel semi solid, since it uses a solid electrolyte on the anolde and a gel on the cathode. These give higher longevity given current solid state progress.

    They operate well in hot environments. They claim to operate pretty well in cold environments and like my tesla they can heat the battery to operate better. VW seems to claim the prototypes operate well, but again we don't have anyone without a financial interest verifying this.

    Hopefully it will work out.

    QuantumScape is currently working on their B-samples, and next year their “Cobra” line will go operational that will make solid-state batteries enough for a couple of hundred field-test EVs for a half a dozen automotive OEM.

    If all goes well, they could ground-break the Volkswagen/PowerCo factory in 2026, but the B-samples as well as the manufacturing process that requires ultrafast sintering of their ceramic solid-state electrolyte/separator need to be proven first.

    If all goes well, there will also be a US joint venture with Ford or GM.

    They claim that their solid-state battery performs better than any conventional battery in every aspect (energy density, power density, longevity, cost, temperature performance, charging rate, and safety), but the actual commercial product—at least the B-sample—remains to be seen.

    The claim on charging is 13 minutes 36 seconds 10%-80% this compares to hyundai ioniq 5 at 18 minutes in a real vehicle. This according the to the latest quantum scape literature in their april report about the b samples. Other claims are about 10% higher energy density and better cold weather performance than the best selling long range pack which would be the telsa model Y. There is a clear disclamer that current b cells don't have the reliability of a commercial product. They still need to implement cobra manufacturing, and bring it to high volume for D cells which should be around 2027. 2026 is an overly optimistic projection that they won't put in official filings. VW could start building a factory now and leave equipment empty until after the tests, but qs still has not gotten to a process for high volume manufacturing and the proposed cobra won't be there until next year at the earlies.

    The cost claims are about some future manufacturing process based on materials. For the near future solid state will remain much higher in price than Li iron phosphate that has its plants built and manufacturing proven.
