gag gifts - just make me so angry ! My mon gave my dad a desert plate sized blue painted tin placard with a 1/4 manila rope border around the edge. It's inscription was " a boat is a hole in the water into which one pours money". It hung in the family 25 ft. 1935 Chris Craft Streamline Cruiser for about 10 years while money was poured into it, :censored:

My dad owned a 32' twin screw Owens Cabin Cruiser which was welded to the dock of my Uncle's Marina for 10 years during my childhood.

It left the dock under it's own power exactly twice.
Once when we went out for a day trip as a family, and once when my sweet mom had the gas dock attendants fetch it from the slip and she took it out for an afternoon alone after she 'shared her thinking' with my dad about ROI.
Being a somewhat know-it-all lad (then as now) of 15 years I bet my mom that I could get the boat under way unassisted.
My dad 'read the room' and it was sold VERY shortly thereafter! :)
Dad got the boat nearly free and sold it the same way.
A painful lesson learned, if not cheaply.

Two happiest days of a boat owners life..... ;)

Boats are hard for some people (mostly dudes) to resist!
I was pondering just now what I might have done if I had been presented with an opportunity to inherit that same boat .....

as are over-the-top - head turning cars. They are opportunities to wastefully drop a ton of money into.

My boss and I had this same conversation just yesterday when he showed me pictures of his (USED!) nearly $50K trail rated Jeep.
I told him that he could at least drive it get takeout.

worth noting, that’s the volume of alcohol in a 1.5 oz measure of a typical 40% hard liquor:

    1.5x0.4=0.6

Our son got me a bottle of Wild Turkey Bourbon 101 proof (50.5%) for Father’s Day, have to be careful with that stuff.

Here is my poor man's answer to owning a boat.
I use it for fishing trips on our local lakes and creeks:
Sea Eagle SE 330 2 person Inflatable Kayak. Package Prices starting at $249 plus FREE Shipping

It requires no gas, motor or registration fee and has given me more fun times than I could post here. It is inflatable and comes with a duffle bag for it and all the accessories - you just throw it in the car and then over your shoulder to hike where you want then inflate and fish. I've had it 20 years and it has never sprung a leak in that time and after taking some very ambitious trips with it. At my age now I don't take it out near as much as I did initially.

Just hypocritically cleaned out our basement pub's refrigerator & bar to hide booze in the utility room. Retired missionaries visiting in a couple days & we don't want to 'stumble' them. Almost of this stuff is years old but gathering it all together, it looks like we have a problem.

The costco canadian whiskey (as well as much of this) is not top shelf, although Costco does have decent quality for the best price.

Was the problem that you couldn't remember where you put it? That Fireball is good drop, slows the drinking down to guzzling rather gulping

In 2011 I purchased non-subscription licenses for Photoshop and acrobat:

and this is how that’s going:

Previous day the pop-up was in upper-right corner, now moved to the middle. Cannot be dismissed.

Addendum: work-around I've found: click on "shop offers", then close the link it opens, makes it eff off, for a good while I hope.

Again, this is with legally purchased, lifetime license.

Not too happy with Toyota at this put. We slapped down $1,000 the first week in May to order my wife's 2024 Toyota Corolla AWD SE and it STILL is not on the "build" list to my dealer.
If they keep delaying, just might have to switch the year to 2025....jiminy crickets!

It's like 'lifetime' fluids in a transmission.
Good for the life of the transmission!!

Time to go back and check their definition of "life". Some outfits have played games with this term, it isn't your life, but the life of something else. The worst I remember hearing was where it meant the life of the product, which some company pre-defined as about 2 years.

One friend who long ago signed up for a "fixed price for life" internet service deal on DSL, found the company took out the copper lines, moved him to fiber optic, and throttled his connection down to the same speed as his original price-for-life speed: 1.5 Mbps. Great back then, but unusable for many of today's uses. I need to recheck with him now that the company appears to be exiting the business.

Japanese Beatles - worthless pest that can devastate a garden, fruit tree, or berry bush in short order.

I garden organically as much as possible and many berries and produce as well as early apples are coming in and I am not going to use any insecticides.. For me that means waking up early each morning and going into the garden, fruit trees and berry bushes and shaking the worthless creatures into a bucket of soapy water.

I don't hold grudges but after seeing how these pest destroy things I hold them in very low esteem.

We had a similar experience with our TIVO DVR system. I won a Tivo in a contest in 1999, and I paid $500 for a non transferable lifetime subscription sometime in the middle of the first decade (2005?) of the new century. When one of the disk drives went bad, they replaced the bad drive and then they informed me that I needed a new "lifetime" subscription because the TiVo had reached it's end pf life.

I don't know what will replace the two Tivo's that we currently used. It's hard to beat being able to record 10 streams at once.

We are still using Windows MediaCenter, on an XP laptop (isolated from the internet once XP went of support life) with a two-channel USB tuner fed from an outdoor antenna. It covers all our needs.

Except when a power glitch shuts down the laptop. Its battery died long ago so it doesn't ride through power outages anymore, now needing a manual restart.

There are very effective pheromone-based traps for Japanese beetles.
