Warming up Prime in Cold weather.

The next 4 minutes of this video is the only test I found of full throttle in ev auto mode with a cold engine. The youtuber says the power output is limited until the engine is warmed up, and comparing the engine sound at the beginning and at the end of the 4 mins it seems to be the case, but I never tried myself.

 

Well, I turned on the Defroster at 28°C and the engine stayed off so it's definitely temperature based...

 

Gen 5 Prius and Primes don't have the exhaust heat trap that the Gen 4 Priuses and Prime used.. unfortunately. My guess is Toyota changed a whole lot th these on warranty on Gens 4 and avoided the potential cost/trouble on gen 5. Shame. It really helped efficiency, specially during winter... oh, and the trap was after both catalytic converters as they are useless if cold. What you see there between both exhaust hangers is a resonator.

The G5 does not have the G4's exhaust heat recirculation system.

@Tideland Prius 's highlighted part is the "Sub Muffler", which is after the catalytic converter or GPF. (Camera is towards the back of the car in the video still).

 

I just see hanger rods, no pipes. And no hoses.

 

The rods are technically pipes. The end welded to the sub-muffler is open.

 

We even have a used one changed under warranty at work. If requested i'll take a pic or 2!

I'm wondering how much of this part is in the coding of a G4 and if it can all be removed if routed properly permanently when using the bypass?


the bypass appeared as it if would last the test of time.

heh.. I still love yall dealership tho, even after one almost got me to buy a water pump and they knew about the warranty recall on the heat exhaust exchanger!

You just need to find an honest one.

I don't know what you mean about coding? There are a ton of cooling sensors but the heat trap by itself is regulated via a simple wax thermostat that's opening or closing a throttle plate in the exhaust and thus allow the gasses to pass thru the heater core or bypass it. The part pictured below (fixed with bolts.) If anything it will take longer to heat to operating temps. I don't know if the ECU would register a fault however..

Btw, here are those G4 Prime exhaust heat recovery system. Pre 2021 version anyway..
