From the title of the article?

Calling something that restores a basic function back to a car a mod doesn't change the fact that Tesla removed standard driver controls to save some money.

Think of the challenge of a two car two driver family and the conventional controls experienced driver having to switch cars. Maybe not needed on a robo-taxi. But is a deal breaker for my family.

i'm not following your line of thought. the car has turn signals that meet required codes.
just because someone doesn't like it doesn't mean they fixed it, it means they modified it. just like the chinese guy that added all the switches for other functions.

When was the last time you saw a car without a turn signal stalk? We aren't talking about a gear shifter that you only have to use at the start and end of a trip. This is a control that a driver should be using regularly during a trip. The stalk is what every car has used for decades, and it can be used in a circle and when doing hand over hand turns.

Yes, this is a mod. That doesn't mean Tesla's change isn't considered broken by many. A car with pedals is broken for a guy without legs. We can install hand accelerators and brakes for them. That doesn't mean it's a good idea to take the pedals out of all cars.

i've never seen one, and if i didn't want a car without signal lever, i wouldn't buy it, or i would do a mod.
i don't have a problem with tesla's design choices as some do, but lots of people mod their cars to 'improve' on the design of the mfg.

Yeah, many do make modifications. Few are for something the manufacturer took out of the car. How many are there for replacing the physical buttons moved to a touch screen?

In Europe, and maybe elsewhere, making modifications involves more work and cost. Changing the wheel and tire size as being done by some here for the gen5 requires filing paperwork and getting an inspection done.

Some car manufacturers are prepping for a regulatory backlash against touch screens.

i would love to see it. you should see the brake light mod thread in the bolt forums. a lot of unhappy owners with the lights at the bottom of the rear.

The push-button electronic parking brakes are similar. Our son's CX5 has that; I'm never quite sure if the damn thing is on or off. Seems similar to the Prius return-to-centre shifter. And if you're doing rear brakes you need to do a #$*!* chicken-dance to push in the caliper pistons; I found that out after about an hour's struggle.
