I have a VeePeak OBD2 01 wireless code reader that I've used for several years in conjunction with the Dash Command app on my iPhone. I bought this 2013 Prius Four and Dash Command connects with it but it obviously doesn't have the specialized battery tests I want so I downloaded the Dr. Prius app but it won't play with the current OBD2 reader. The Dr. P app won't recognize the OBD2 device. I do a little reading and see that the app builder recommends a different, I guess newer, version of the VeePeak. It won't break the bank to buy the newer VeePeak but before I do..... any experience or insight to share?

The Prius runs great but I have only had it one month and 1000 miles. It's quiet and smooth in operation and averaging just under 48 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Six tanks, calculating mpg by dividing distance by fuel burn. 189,xxx miles. I can't discern any oil burning in 1000 miles and no loss of coolant in the reservoirs which I am happy about. I pulled the EGR pipe out and it was remarkably clean. I scraped out the 2 or 3 inches of accessible intake manifold with a semi-rigid hose taped to a hand vacuum to pull and retain the scrapings. All the carbon collected from the pipe and manifold was bone dry and amounted to less than 1/2" teaspoon. I will pull the entire EGR valve and collector chamber soon for a through examination and cleaning.

Never mind, I figured it out. Plus this was probably posted in the wrong forum.

Really? It's working for me. It took a little while to sort out network connections but now it connects in about 5 seconds.

"Useless" is a pretty strong adjective in this context. For my purposes the VeePeak BLE device in conjunction with Dr. Prius does what I want it to for now which was assessing the health of the traction battery in a new to me car and don't expect to delve into areas of the ECU or DTCs not flagged by the basic app Dash Command. I do appreciate your knowledge and experience.

Dr. Prius has been very helpful for my gen 2. I installed Jack's LFP upgrade, and it has worked out fine. I notice your volt diff is quite low. That's good. That is what I look at first, then batt temp in some situations.

Plugged a Chinese Bluetooth dongle in a Prius and almost destroyed the car. Made so many errors I was fearful I had destroyed the car. Put a mallet to that thing quick. Also plugged a 12v male to two female adapter in one time: nearly set the car on fire. Returns it to Walmart and stupid me tried that again. Read my lips: this app and whatever Chinese dongle you're using isn't worth the risk you're taking

I don't know that but I feel like if I ask you how you know it does it's going to lead somewhere I don't want to go. Thank you sir and have a great day!

all I am saying is, youd rather use something that cant read all values from a vehicle and rely on the output through an app... for all you know, having a proper device might just yield different variables some of which might just be of concern.. but hey. have a great day yourself.

You'll learn the hard way someday. Maybe since you do one repair a year it'll take some time. Mechanics do one repair before breakfast. If you did 7 repairs a day you'd sound like I do

I try to educate folks... you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink it.

Thanks for your insight into my abilities. My dad was a master mechanic, one of those Depression era stories. Started fixing stuff on the farm and eventually Uncle Sam trusted him to fix supersonic Century series jets. I started learning at his knee and have worked on my own cars, boats, and motorcycles since 1970. British, Japanese, German stuff. If you used to or still ride Jennings it's likely we have met.

When I retired from a career in logistics I got bored pretty quickly and took a part time job with company that distributes auto/truck parts and supplies used in repair shops. What I did for them was deliver orders to commercial accounts, mostly small independent shops but a few large dealerships. It was amazing to learn the numbers of small shops that are tucked away in small commercial warehouse centers and the back side of some other type of business. One, two, three bay shops busy every day of the week. Many languages, nations, and tribes as the best book ever written on maintaining stuff says.

As a professional mechanic (?) you know this well but it bears repeating..... There are a lot of busy shops with techs that don't know sass from shinola even the ones doing 7 repairs a day. The ones willing to share their experience are the ones to cultivate relationships with and the ones to value. The mechanics that know more than others do and value lording that over others are best left to their egos.

The one Dr P screenshot looks good to me. I'd recommend (it looks like you've got access to the Options menu) when your battery temps start to mount the 100 F temp range, that you start the battery fans override and get them spinning a bit faster than their defaults. Anything you can figure out how to keep battery temps closer to the 80 - 100 F temps during summer and winter, should help in many ways.
