    Reference doesn't help though.
    Well, I guess it would....
I will know in 4500 miles if it works or not.

I've also used seafoam for 3-500 miles before changing the oil each time.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to try it. Only $8 for the seafoam, and $5 extra for each
container of oil. So a $25 investment is worth it to me.

Original piston and rings I assume. Are you contemplating a block rebuild?

That link takes me to mobil 0w20 engine oil but it looks like you guys are talking about seafoam

This engine is actually putrid, the lady i got it from tipped an extra 5l of oil in to it, on top of the maybe 4l that was already in it she was hoping to stop the rattle lol (they said maybe it needs oil)!!! ..

there is solids in my intake manifold much like what you might clean out of chip cooker!

Now trying to find a 10mm double hex spline socket, or 12mm triple square.. what ever the darn stupid thing is!!

That’s the correct one. There should be an 8mm and 10mm set available on Amazon.

this is a screen grab from Amazon.ca; just searching for keywords should find it.

Hi Dogman, unfortunately we don't have AutoZone here in Australia ..

Thanks mendel I'm just doing the rounds now around all the local places that may have it!

Gasket Masters say it's 12mm triple square and some say it's 10mm bi hex meanwhile here in Australia they are just called spline sockets! hopefully whatever I end up with is a nice snug fit anyway

It's NOT a standard splined socket. It's a special type.
Didn't realize you were in Australia....
Just make sure that it fits VERY tightly in the head bolts....

10mm double-hex is the correct size; it’s spec’d in the Toyota Repair Manual*. It has 60 degree corners, while GM’s triple-square has 90 degree corners, that protrude “slightly” more.

    * Full engine section of Repair Manual is linked at bottom of my signature (on a phone turn it landscape to see signatures).

Thanks guys, it's a pita getting to the bottom of what places here are actually selling, triple square or double hex.. they all just say "12 point splined socket"

All I can buy locally is triple square, although not 100% correct it's what Gasket Masters are using every day.. if close enough and won't hurt anything I can grab them tomorrow

Hi RJ, yes a little black material left behind both sides..

the gasket it's self has to be partially to blame for this failure rate surely, look at that pathetic coating peeling off it's like the guy that painted all those peeling white 2005 corollas was in cahoots with the guy making the head gaskets and just wanted to mess with us lol

I wonder if they’re completely black at the outset? I get the sense there are some shiny zones, those semi-circle areas.

Toyota’s revised head gasket for these engines is almost solid black.

I'm not sure what the original gaskets were like back in 2012 but can confirm the revised gasket (1111537062) is completely black both sides much like (but not to be confused with) the Chinese copies circulating online for under $50 ..

Today's trade price for the genuine gasket was $124 AUD

Measured a couple random head bolts and they are very close to min/max spec, (149 long & 9.4 -9.5mm diameter) I have a bad habit of tightening bolts a little before backing them out! was hoping to reuse the genuine bolts but they are too close for comfort so I will get some new ones

BTW the triple square is not ideal but it works in a pinch, in the absence of a double hex I have been wondering what might work better out of 12mm triple square and normal (6 sided) 10mm hex

i sold my 05 Prius to a neighbor in Houston, TX for $800 and he found a GOOD used replacement engine for only $400 in a Houston Salvage Yard ! ! ! He used to run a business called WE FIX SHORTS; that's why he had "junk-yard connections" and he got such a GREAT price ! They let him inspect the spark plugs. that was FOUR years ago, and it is still running GREAT !

05 gen2 1nz is a completely different beast to the gen3 2zr, the 1NZ is a much cheaper engine to buy, easier to find ..and way less likely to fail
