Overwhelming? Yet another headline writer didn't actually read the story he was headlining:

It would be problematic in my two most recent workplaces. And I've been retired more than a decade.

highlander = 4,500 pounds

land cruiser = 5,000 pounds

model 3 weight = 3,500 pounds

 

Paying a lot more in taxes in road repair, mostly.
Although it could be argued that since BEV's are mostly owned by high wage earners they "pay their fair share" (or don't) in other ways.
As always, it's the haves and the have nots.

The T3 is closer to 4000# than it is to 3500, and it's a really small car.
By comparison Priuses (also not-big cars) are 3200#.

500-800# isn't much but it isn't nothing either.

 

Those weights are all nothing to a road designed for 18 ton trucks.

Road repairs for weather cost more than those for adding a battery to a car.

 

2024 Ford F-150 = 4,391 to 5,863 pounds

2021 Ford F-250 = 5,677 lbs to 7,538 pounds

2024 Chevy Suburban = 5,616 to 6,016 pounds

Commercial trucks = 20,000 to 100,000 pounds.

 

They pay fuel taxes that are supposed to fix roads.
The larger the vehicle the more they pay.

I'll fully agree that BEVs are not 'tearing up the roads' with their weight.
There is some justification to the claim that in some states they're not 'paying their fair share' for infrastructure upkeep.

It's a complicated argument both ways, because local gas is $2.619 and we actually have pretty good roads.
My brother lives behind the tinsel curtain where gas is a lot more expensive due to initiatives designed to improve ROADS.
I cannot speak to the condition of the roads and bridges on the left coast - but they get more government kickbacks for BEVs.

As far as the fuel tax, I don't know.
The total price is $2.61 as of an hour ago according to Gas Buddy.
The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents a gallon and the state taxes here are less than $.30.

If the Federal government were as motivated to fix roads by making wealthy people 'pay their fair share' they would raise fuel taxes and institute a nationwide tax on electricity - but the current regime is instead yanking carbon OUT OF the strategic reserves.

That means SOMEBODY ELSE must think that the current prices are not 'artificially low.'

A Prius is a 'midsized' car at 3200#
A Tesla is a 'compact' car at 3800# including the optional k9 package.

 

idk what those monikers mean, but the M3 had a lot larger cabin than my prius.
it is a few inches shorter than our hycam, but feels as spacious inside and trunk.

Tesla uses BMW as bench mark models, and 3 series is an EPA compact(100 to 109 cu.ft. passenger and cargo volume). The Model 3's exterior dimensions are close to a 3 series, but its EPA volume is 112cu.ft., thanks to better space usage of a BEV platform. The BMW is at 105cu.ft. The Prius and Camry have 115cu.ft.. The Model 3 cabin is 6cu.ft. larger than the Prius, but 3cu.ft. smaller than the Camry.

 

the problem is with how the space is used. you really need to sit in a vehicle to find out.
