Planning for DIY oil change Gen 5, what do I need and where do I get started?

    Sorry for the dumb question. I’m planning to start doing DIY oil changes at home since the car is about to hit the mark for the oil changes soon. Also, Toyota does every 10k, but I’d like to do 5k.

    I’d like to know what I’d need to do in terms of tools and equipment for the oil change. And is there a guide I could follow for it? I have a ramp at home to lift the car.

    There's a link in my signature* on oil changes, 3rd gen specific, but some universal tips. Pretty sure it's a spin-on filter, more'n likely the usual size (regarding oil filter socket dimensions). I think the volume of oil required at refill spec is in owners manual? Torque values for earlier gens were13 ft/lb for the spin-on filter, and 27 ft/lb for the drain bolt.

    There's lots of options for oil filter socket, but I've never had a problem with the Honda socket; it's indestructable. Any Honda dealership parts department will have it, or be able to order one for you. I believe this is the current part number:

    Honda oil filter wrench: 07AAA-PLCA100

    You might consider a short-term Techstream subscription, to see what Toyota says on the subject. It is pretty cut-and-dried though. For years with Honda, the Owner's Manual had an oil change instruction. Not sure if that's still the case; I know Toyota keeps everything behind a #@%&! paywall...

    Couldn't find a current 23 change video? pretty straightforward I've changed oil on all Prius!! 14 mm to remove the oil plug, spin on factory filter! EZ !I use Toyota brand oil but will use mobile1 I did mine at 7K dealer honored the 10K service, but I plan on doing it at 3-5k on my black 23 Limited! Don't forget the washer on your drain plug!

    Congrats on wanting to service your own vehicle! (Oil changes is how I got started....now I can do any maintenance item and working my way up to the more advanced stuff.)

    Over the past couple decades, I've replaced my oil drain plug with a Fumoto valve on my Hondas. It tends to make oil changes faster and cleaner, and eliminates the need to replace plug washers. Has anyone tried one on their Prius before? I doubt I will make the switch until the "free" dealer changes are done, but figured I'd start the thought process now.

    I did the first oil change on my 2024 Prime yesterday. Car mileage was 2035 miles. I estimated gas engine mileage was around 600 miles based on fuel used and using 40 mpg for engine operation. I do an early oil change on my vehicles as standard practice. Planning to do next oil change at 5000 miles and every 5000 interval. Most of my driving needs met with EV only. I put the car in hybrid mode typically once a week to prevent fuel in tank going stale along with its good for the ICE.

    Compared to my 2019 MX-5 Miata, this was an easy oil change. I can’t use the ramps on the Miata so I have to jack the car and there is a metal plate that needs removal for filter and drain plug access.

    I have some drive on ramps I bought at NAPA years ago. Fortunately there was clearance between car and front of ramp so I could use them on the Prius. I use an oil extractor to remove most of the oil. It pulled about 4 qts. Thus when I remove the drain plug the oil doesn’t come out as a gusher. Maybe 3-4 ozs oil when drain plug removed. This possibly because front end of car elevated while on the ramps.

    I have an oil filter socket that I had for Honda filters. The one I bought years ago is composite material with a metal insert for the 3/8 drive and made in USA. No part number on it unfortunately. Used a ratchet to loosen the filter which was on tight. Could not loosen hand force only. Installed the Toyota OEM filter and used a new crush washer on the drain plug though the original could have been re-used. 4 qts of 0W-16 Toyota oil is all I put in. Books calls for 4.1 qts. The oil level just slightly below full on dip stick.

    I purchased the consumables from Toyota online parts. 2 cartons of 6 qt oil bottles (12 qts) 2 filters and 2 crush washers cost $91. Free shipping over $50 and UPS delivered 2 days later. Bought from a Toyota dealer in Gresham, OR where I bought accessories previously. Oil change cost me $35. Much cheaper than using local dealer for an oil service or purchasing the consumables.

    In my experience Honda, Mazda and Toyota all use the same size oil filter, as far as the socket interface. I'm using the Honda socket; got it in maybe 1990 (for a Honda motorcycle, at the time their automotive filter was bigger).
