10 K Service, less than impressed! dealership misery!

Toyota has always been giving us flooded-cell batteries without telling us; so, I don't why they would make an exception for the Prius by telling us.

Moreover, I don't know what is wrong with a flooded-cell battery to begin with. Some of the top-rated batteries (such as Odyssey Extreme Series 35-PC1400T) are flooded-cell batteries in Consumer Reports tests. Contrarily, many of the bottom-rated batteries (like X2Power Premium AGM SLI65AGMDP, DieHard Platinum AGM-24F, and Deka Intimidator AGM 9A35/85) are AGM batteries as well. You don't automatically get a better battery by opting for AGM—the quality greatly varies.

 

Well, I think it constitutes fraud, to sell one thing as another.

 

Toyota never sold it as AGM. It was an old article by an independent repair shop in an Atlanta suburb that you quoted, and they were talking about Gen 2 and Gen 3—two-plus generations earlier.

 

Well, multiple sources tell me that the Prius Prime uses an AGM battery. I tend to take that over someone who provides no evidence to back up the claim that it isn't.

You have had zero credible sources. It is strange that you believe sources with no credibility but dismiss consistent information from many owners here who actually have a lot experience with the newer Priuses.

• Dealer part departments know nothing about the internal construction of parts.
• Your other quote was Gen-3-era information from a random repair shop, which had no relevance to Gen 4 and/or Gen 5.
• Of course, you could have made a simple call to the GS Yuasa's US offices and be told that it was not an AGM battery if you were still doubtful. You chose to believe random information instead.

 

Paul Gregory has made it pretty evident that whoever he is, his purposes are contrary to what we who have responded to his post believe them to be. He knows full well that the Gen 5 has a lead acid battery.

You missed the part where I said you could, but being able to do something isn’t necessarily the wisest choice. Charging any type of battery at less than designed charging parameters reduces the battery’s capacity. There’s a real reason battery charging algorithms are different for each type of battery. Yes you can use your charger settings to charge different batteries. But even the instructions you posted advise you to check the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Again, you MIGHT benefit from further research.

IF (and that seems to be a huge “if”) he actually has one (and that has gone beyond “doubtful” to extremely unlikely). Notice the generic picture of “his” Gen 5?

 

Not saying you're wrong, it's just that Toyota isn't very forthcoming with information about it.

No mention of AGM, has a charge status sight glass, and removal caps along the top, presumably for topping up with distilled water, a hallmark of conventional flooded lead/acid batteries.

 

As an owner of a 2022, my first look at the battery told me that it was a flooded lead acid battery. That was pretty much everything I needed to know in that regard and I felt Toyota were as forthcoming as necessary. Even my wife recognized it as one and she doesn’t have as much experience as I do or the interest as I do.
But then again, it was a simple matter for us, since we actually had one in our possession.
