Hybrid system Malfunction (Visit Your Dealership)

    Got a mulit-information display message on the Information display area (on left side of meter display):

    "Hybrid System
    Malfunction"
    "Visit Your Dealer"
    and then
    "Check Engine
    Visit Your Dealer"

    Also noticed an illuminated red CHECK ENG indicator on the right side of the meter display.

    New 2024 Prius Prime XSE purchased 12/29/23. 3500 miles on odometer.

    Prius was parked in driveway for 7 days while out of town. Vehicle was turned off (not in Ready mode), headlights off, radio off, all doors locked windows up. KARR security system (dealer installed option) seems to work independent of any user input (light flashes at night).

    Meter Display SOC (State of Charge) gauge Green portion (EV) not illuminated,
    Blue portion (HV) only partially illuminated. Driving the car a short distance did not make a discernable change in the Battery SOC Blue portion. I decided to force traction battery CHARGE by holding the HV/EV mode selector switch down untill the CHG MODE indicator light illuminated and drove the Prius around untill the blue portion of the battery SOC indicator was all illuminated and the GREEN portion of the SOC had started to be illuminated (indication about 15% SOC for EV use). This indicated to me that the Traction battery was indeed gaining charge back in CHG MODE.

    12v battery had discharged from 12.65v to 12.22v (resting voltage) over the 7 day period.
    Put vehicle in READY mode. ICE engine started right away and 12v battery charged at 14.26 V for about 30 minutes, then 13.83v for about another 30 minutes. Then resting voltage 12.66v . Car in READY mode again, battery charge at 14.2v for short time, then 12.78v, car turned off, battery at 12.60v resting.

    Off to dealer tomorrow at 7:30 AM for walk in 'Visit to Dealer' effort. Have backup appt at 12:30 Saturday if walk in does not work out.

    Edit, late get-up. No walk in to dealer today 4/25.
    Saturday appt most likely.

    I parked at a hotel around 5PM. The next morning around 9, my Prius 12V battery was reading 6.7V, and it was apparently not enough to activate the 12V charging converter. A message appeared saying, "battery too low." The lights only flickered and I heard a vibrating clicking sound. It sounded like something bad for the system, but fortunately a boost from a battery pack brought it back.

    My question is, why, if there's sufficient power to show a low battery message, why can't there be enough power to engage the 12V charging system? My Gen 3 did that.

    Using a clamp ammeter, I measured approximately 340 mA of parasitic drain. I have no idea if it varies, but it is apparently enough to drain the battery overnight.

    Sounds like the 12v. In one way, I hope it is.
    Otoh, why are they failing so often?

    Relatively new iteration .... similar to the genII challenges. Takes a while before the bugs get shaken out.

    Bug shaking used to more on pre-production cars? They seem to miss stuff on every Gen; too much rush-to-market? Follow up with deny-and-dodge.

    Honestly, the pandemic messed up a lot of things and created scheduling delays, supply chain issues etc that are still probably rippling out. In a lot of ways, the small number of 2023 models means that the 2024 is kinda like the "launch" year moreso than the 23s.

    such is life, not everyone can wait for the first year or two of a new model year car to go buy before buying.

    Is there an OBDII port on a Prius Prime XSE 2023-24 Toyota ? (Where is it)
    Are there OBDII diagnostic code readers available for this car ?

    Local toy dealer does not have ANY loaners and refers you to a car rental business. They do not provide a vehicle while they have your new prius in their shop.

    It is not the 12-V battery. OP already clarified it.

    maybe, maybe not. op didn't have a load test done. no 12v should drop from 12.65 to 12.22 over 7 days

    This (total system failures) was reported multiple times in this forum. It looks like there are still rough edges in Gen 5. They should eventually be smoothed out. Hopefully you didn't get a lemon. Let us know what they find out. It sucks to have this with a brand-new car.

    Yeah, but the car goes into the READY mode. The 12-V battery is not used in the READY mode. Only the DC converter is used in the READY mode.

    good point!
    still, i'd worry about the 12v if it were mine. perhaps whatever is draining the battery so quickly is causing the codes

    Regardless of the cars light demands on the 12 volt, if it’s dropping, and fast, it’s days are numbered.

    No, they state Toyota will not pay for that. And then dealership will not pay for it.

    I agree with you. Seems like 12v battery voltage drops wather quickly.

    Took the car into the local Toy dealership yesterday mid-day. Waited at the dealership for the car to be returned to me.
    The service writer performed a OBDII port Check ENG code check and said there was at least one diagnostic code. Put it in line for a tech to complete diagnostics. I told servicde writer I need a ride home, tha the Prius was the only car. I told him I would wait at the dealership for the car to be returned to me. I checked in with them at 12:40. They released the car back to me at 2:00. The service writer informed me that the car had several engine CHK codes related to low voltage on several different systems. He did not itemize the codes or systems. He said the tech resert the codes and the systems. He stated that If I leave the car and not start it for a weeks time, I should have someone come buy and start the car in the driveway ocasionally and let it run.

    "customer states, vehicle was parked on driveway for 1 week, upon starting the check engine light was on. [note, this is not what i stated] Check/advise perform health check. FOUND MULTIPLE DTC's RELATED TO 12V MEMORY.
    Performed re-set and test drive. Pass

    I ask about a 12v battery test.
    Service writer stated 12v Battery performance test was Good.
    I ask if they performed a battery test with printed out results.
    Service writer answered NO, they did not perform a load test, it was not waranted given the problem and their diagnostics and it takes 1 to 1-1/2 hours to do that test.

    I was disappointed.
    Next time I will request a Battery Load Test.
