2012 Prius 3 starting leaking chocolate milk

    Toyota Prius 3 recently started leaking chocolate milk, and it appears to becoming from between the 3/4 cylinders above the freeze plug in the photos. Is there any way this ISN'T a head gasket failure? I've read this is common on the year Prius, but there's no sign of oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil (yet?).

    Can you get a picture up further where it's originating? I've never seen one throw it out of the car like that or have it running out of side of the car and then hitting the drive axle and getting slung

    The 2nd picture is about as close as I got (the car is down and parked again). It looked to me like it's leaking down the back of the engine and being squirted onto the exhaust, and I hadn't considered it being flung by the axle. The car has 160k-ish miles and this just started last week when I noticed a small puddle on the driveway.

    160k miles, wife bought it new off the lot in 2012 or 2013. Really not work has been done on it other than oil changes, air filters, and brakes.

    Yes sir that running flow is running down there and hitting that drive axle boot and then that slinging it all around so that's you know quite a stream it looks like or something how long does it show take to show on the dipstick?. That almost seems more like a valve cover gasket at this kind of mileage of valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals and all that stuff would not be unrealistic usually oil doesn't run a steady stream down the whole side of the motor like that not saying it can't but it's quite unusual and then this is too far in the middle of the motor to be the timing chain tensioner

    Probably not head gasket because in Gen3 that's usually just coolant between cylinder #1 & #2... And as Tombuk2 said, chocolate stuff can often come from failed boots on CV joints covers.

    Just clean it all up and see if it comes back...

    Well, it's rare for a Prius, but you got coolant in the oil...
    99% of the time it's the head gasket.
    Hopefully, the head isn't warped or cracked.

    That color is usually from a CV joint boot leak being slung in a perfectly straight line.

    It just started last week and I changed the oil to see what was going on (oil was due for a change and was normal dark/used color). We haven't driven it but a few miles since so no chance to really gauge on the dipstick.

    We have a winner! Now the new question is, can I replace just the boot or do I have to do the entire axle?

    You can replace just the boot they also make very good split boots now so you don't have to undo the axle even you can just cut the old boot off and follow the instructions with the split boot from what I understand the modern version of the split boot is quite good I personally have not used one usually when an axle gets an ate up boot. I'm one of those people that just replace the axle and then I drop my old one off at the drive axle place and they rebuild it with new boots new joints whatever It's like $88 I think or something like that and I take it and put it on the shelf in the shop ready for the next time or the next car.

    If it's the outer boot, you'll have to cut the old boot off, then use a big
    hammer and smack the part of the joint that is attached to the axel to pop it off.
    It's best to put the axel in a vice. Then you can install the new boot.
    Don't let any of the ball bearings or the race twist out of the hub. They are
    a pain to get back in!

    I would go over this but I hate to keep beating a dead horse but this is not the one to be keeping moving forward they aren't keepers there for use and then not Don't get attached to these things moving forward It's not like that anymore not all ended in 2009 or so

    I know that stuff, the inner CV joint has grease seeping past the large end of the boot and throwing it around.
