This is the worst time to buy a Prius Prime in terms of cost to buyer

I too like my Gen 5 a lot and I never considered a Prius before for how slow it was and how it looked. But I’d be happier if Toyota priced it $ 4-5k lower. I believe Toyota is making good money selling the Prius at current prices.
In some other markets, USD 30K is the price tag for a mid size EV with nearly 400hp, double wishbone all aluminum suspension, a lot of screens, etc… Since these are not available here, buying a Prius is still a good value long term…especially with the new look and performance.

 

In Japan , Prime top trim is about $34K USD

You cant compare japanese prices at all - besides being their homemarket, they had (wage) stagnation for over 20 years, barely inflation now and exchange rate is crazy these days. One reasone Toyota was so succesfull last quarters.

You should compare with EU prices - then you see how good you have it. Top trim is roughly 55k$ here (including tax & fees though)

EDIT: I talked to one Japanese colleague and he said for him the P5 is pretty unattractive considering the high price compared to other cars (in Japan)

Shockingly good deal when it stickers $37,500 after destination at the cheapest with zero options, which I don't think even exist for the most part.

 

Did you really just drop a list that contains countries likes Cuba, North Korea as a some relevant market comparison to the US, EU and Japan?
Besides stating wrong facts at least about UK it doesnt have anything to do with P5 prices...

But they have to ship them from Japan, and they have to ship them across the country/continent after arriving at port, and then they have to pay duty and taxes themselves before it arrives on the lot, etc.

The reason domestics are well priced is due to free trade agreements making supply a lot easier. And for domestic built Toyota's, the prices are still going to reflect local salaries too for the domestic manufactured parts. Though a lot of Toyota's parts are made elsewhere so shipping and all that logistics plus duties will still factor into pricing there as well.
