IMG_5119.jpeg That bridge could be constructed as a flying bridge making the center span long enough to only require supports in the sandbars outside the primary channel area, costs 3x more but it’s been done elsewhere, would make it nearly impossible to crash a ship into the supports then. (Can’t crash into something that doesn’t exist)

I was told hours after the disaster that there was a small fire on the ship and 2 of the mates had been treated for burns.

Anchor was down before the mayday,
My guess is when they regained control they slammed into full reverse making lots of smoke, not that it

I read somewhere that this port is an automobile receiving point. I wonder if Toyota uses it as a port they regularly offload new vehicles at ?

It's the largest Auto offloading Eastern Seaboard port

Once meant you could find good prices on some models in the Baltimore area. Pre-pandemic, Sparks started at $10k there.

    LOL,
Perhaps a mine field around the base? Blow the bow off and let the ship 'submarine' into harbor floor. Of course that would also cut down on sport fishing by the bridge ... you know, a win-win.

So now that the port is blocked off, does it mean the prices on some models in Baltimore Area will go up ?

Prices for any model that were shipped into there will likely go up for the East, and even the country. Cars aren't the only thing shipped through that port. Which is why Biden wants the feds to pay for the fix; to get it done faster.

That's actually not a bad flex.
I'm betting that there have been other instances where you accept the inevitable corruption with a fixed-fee no-bid contract and use early-completion bonuses to get them to do the work on time - and hopefully correctly.
As I stated before the current administration will also get some top cover for some of the increased tightening in logistics caused by the Red Sea fiasco.

Thing Number First is unplugging the harbour.
You can still get stuff out of the harbour and reroute excess shipping to the larger ports on the right coast.

Baltimore is not our largest or most important port.
I think it was 10th or 11th - but still, you do not want to reduce your breathing by that much.

Faster than waiting for funds from the insurance companies.

Much smaller scale, but an interstate overpass was severely damaged by a truck fire a few years ago in Philly, and they got that fixed quick.

"At about 1:30, a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I’ve been over many, many times commuting from the state of Delaware either on a train or by car."

You leave out car. This is live speech, not writing, now if he had said by train only, something could be said it was an error. It is sad.

I am hearing the ship runs on heavy Marine diesel Fuel (aka bunker fuel) when out in the ocean, but should have been using regular light diesel in the port. Switching to the heavy fuel too early could explain the problem, but that is unlikely to have happened. A couple weeks we should get clues from NTSB prelim report, and also NTSB is very good about communicating as soon as possible, so I expect we will hear as soon as possible.

I listened to P46's AM tongue bathers trying to explain away this gaff before last, and if you happened to listen to listen to it in it's unaltered state, then yeah.
    You're right.
    It's sad.

    Republicans do it too.
Back when P46 was merely an old dolt but they used to slow his speeches down juuuuust a little bit.
    Now?
    They don't have to.
It's like listening to a drunk that knows that they're intoxicated trying to get all the words out before they stumble.

Biden has been a pathological political liar since before his age-related cognitive decline started to become more of a thing.
What they always do is to try to identify with group x by saging "I did the thing" or "my kid did the thing..."
It's reflexive - and since he's losing a step around the bag, he doesn't even realize he's doing it.

This isn't his first (or second, or third) completely made-up story involving trains.

Nothing was made up except quoting him as saying he rode the train across the bridge. The lie is the false quote.

Ok ... let me listen to that less than 30 seconds again ...

I guess I could twist that into riding a train up to the bridge then getting in a car to across it
    (not)

Why go to the trouble of misreading it that way, when you could just interpret it as meaning "on a train or by car"?

Has the advantage of being exactly what he said, therefore needing no twisting at all.

We would not have used the Francis Scott Key Bridge but often used the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.. The longest spans:
    • 1,200 ft - Francis Scott Key Bridge, truss
    • 3,200 ft - Chesapeake Bay Bridge, suspension
This suggests a replacement, suspension bridge could have the main supports on both shores of the Patapsco River. Certainly cheaper than a tunnel like the B&P train tunnel I remember under Baltimore.

I've only been on the bridge about a dozen times, and under it twice.

I've been on (and under) the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in FL more times.
