How many here used to own a previous gen Prius?

I'm wondering how many here used to own a previous gen Prius, and how many are new to the model brand.

Also, what gen did you use to own?

According to Carmax sales data, Prius is the car brand with the most loyal customers, with 38% of Prius car buyers getting another Prius.

I just realized that Carmax list of models with most loyal customers was 50% Toyota/Lexus!

1. Those data are dated, from 2018 and 2022, early adopters. By end of 2023, BEV cars are being eclipsed by the growth of hybrids (HEVs and PHEVs mostly from Toyota). Prius sales by itself jumped by more than 300% in Feb 2024, even with supply constraints.

The resale value of Tesla is also crap (in fact, the worst in the BEV industry in USA right now, although Fisker may have beaten its downward trend because Fisker is going bankrupt), whereas Prius resale values are high, so I'm sure some people are picking it up because used ones are hell discounted (so sorry for the original owners)

2. Tesla has pretty much 2 models. Toyota has a hell lot more, so its numbers are spread out. Toyota sells a hell lot more cars more than Tesla, and given Tesla is very big in China (where the Chinese makers are squeezing it hard), I very much doubt Tesla will get even close to Toyota. Especially as even its BEV dominance in USA dropped from 80% to now around 50%.

And in the end, this is about Prius in a Prius chat forum, not Tesla people who are seemingly peeved Carmax shows higher sales loyalty for Prius owners.

 

My youngest brother has one, bought in 2021, was even in long waiting list. He was really excited at the beginning about the plugging in and all that, but he's since bought a 2024 Mazda, and a Subaru CrossTrek for his kid. I think both are ICE cars.

As far as I know he will not buy a Tesla again. He was pissed at the drop in value. Haven't asked him about repair costs, but I think it's a given repair costs are high based on that disaster at Hertz.

If you've ever been in one, the interior is an empty wasteland. Just one big screen where you need to do almost everything. Bad design that probably contributed to the death of that lady who sank into a pond when she pushed the wrong part of the screen.

 

Sample size too small, but it is interesting that the biggest chunk right now are people who have never owned Prius before (and probably would not have owned one when it was more "quirky" looking?)

 

What's their methodology?

In the case of Carmax, the biggest car reseller in the nation, it's actual raw sales. You can't get any more closer to facts than that.

Not sure why BEV fans want to come in and rain on the gen 5 parade, but this might get you riled up. The 2024 Prius Prime has an additional positive citation to its name.

It's the greenest car in the nation, beating all other cars (ICE, HEVs, PHEVs, and BEVs) ;-)

Waiting for the first gen 1 to show up ;-)

 

Well, I'm glad the new update of the 5th gen has lured you in. It looks like after decades of people complaining (Including me about the 4th gen design), Toyota finally decided to try and see what a total redesign would do.

 

I absolutely love the 2nd gen. I rented one in 2009, and that's what pushed me to buy a 3rd gen.

The 2nd gen was featured in many feature shows and TV shows, including Curb you Enthusiasm and that great ending of Six Feet Under. Oh, and I think in the TV show weeds, it was the gen that some gangster called U-turn said was good for "sneaking up on m*therf*kers" lol

It has such a unique and quirky look. It's my second fav after the 3rd gen.
