If I absolutely had to pick a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, it would be the Y because of the hatch alone. I am biased.

I am at the stage where I don’t need the perceived security of a trunk, and I wouldn’t want to have any car with a trunk as a daily driver. I test-drove a Crown because I wanted to see if the Crown Signia was something I would be in the market for.

I have dogs and go on road trips. My preference is wagon > hatch > liftback > crossover-style > anything else. It colors my perception of cars, and the US market isn’t ideal for my taste but it’s not the worst either.

People want lockable storage on their cars, and the perception of safety helps.

I'm still amazed when I occasionally learn what people are willing to trust to a car trunk across a weekend but I think it's just my age showing.

I view it as some of the pudding that proves how much property crime has fallen over the past 40 years.

I have had cars broken into regardless of body shape. I don’t perceive a trunk as a benefit since a car can be broken into even if it has nothing of value in it. I do agree that trunks and especially frunks are more secure, but not enough for me to factor it into my decision.

If some people prefer sedans, that’s great, but after living with a car with a trunk for many years, I have no interest in one as a daily driver.

I don't know what purpose the Crossover fills among the four types, but then I really don't know the car market in Japan. Presumably, Toyota had valid reasons for giving it a trunk instead of a liftback. Exporting some here likely is about supporting the Japan factories.

For here, I don't think the Sport/hatchback would do well. Back when they were more available, the lift/hatchback version of the midsize car wasn't the most popular version. In terms of utility. The Crown hatch wouldn't offer more than the Venza. Then the line up now has a fancy sedan opening while having plenty of SUVs. With some buyers switching to SUVs just for the increased ride height, the Crossover should do better than the Sedan.

Then we don't get the Corolla wagon. Toyota seems to have concerns over selling the hatchback and wagon of model together here, and the Crown wagon will do better than the hatchback.

In the last 13 years I haven't used the cover for the trunk on either my Prius v or my Rav4. I lock the car but i very seldom have anything in the car I could not afford to lose.

The kick my foot up and the hatch opens is one of my most often used features of the Rav4. I've picked up the last of the groceries in both hands and am ready to take them into the house. Just kick. Arrive with a golf bag in my arms and just kick.

My wife prefers the height and comfort of a sedan. Others do too. But for everyday utility an SUV is hard to beat.

For me it's both security and safety. I knew a lady that was killed in a single car accident at 25mph by a sharp object that bounced up from the cargo space and hit her in the head.

A cargo net or cover can help. But I don't think most, if not all of them are secured down well enough for my liking.
