Warming up Prime in Cold weather.

    The radiant heat function is available on the bZ4X and RZ300e/450e. The problem is that this removes the glovebox on the passenger side.

    I wouldn't like losing the glovebox AND the storage space in the trunk personally.

    For me, the big thing about feeling cold is my nose. If its too cold my nose gets cold and I dislike that in particular. We need a nose heater ;D

    FYI, high end Mercedes models (think SL and S-Class) have radiant heat warmers in the door panels and centre armrest so it's only a matter of time before those filter down market.

    They do? That's something I thought about last year after preheating my Model 3. I take my coat off but the armrests are still cold. It doesn't stop me from driving without my coat on as they warm up pretty fast from body heat but it would be nice to have them warm when getting into the car.

    I took it off last year at -27°C. Preheated the car for about half an hour and the car was a warm 21°C inside.

    Yes, it's true that Prius Prime's remote climate prep is limited in extremely cold temperatures. One workaround is to preheat the car manually while it's still plugged in to ensure warmth.

    Won't work. When it's below -10°C (above that, I don't consider that "extremely cold temperatures"), it needs the engine to warm up the cabin and the engine won't start if the car is plugged in. I don't know why it's like that, but it is what it is.

    Which part? The needing the engine or not turning it on?

    Doesn't turn while plugged cause the car might be in a house garage.

    The -10C limit is simply because heat pumps need some heat outside in order to transfer to inside the cabin. At that point, there just isn't enough heat outside for the car heat pump to work.

    I know about the limit of the heat pump. My other car and house each has one too :)

    Since the engine won't start by pressing the A/C remote button, there is no danger of it running in a garage, plugged or not. Beside, what if it's in a garage and not plugged in?

    Well if the engine turns on and its in an enclosed space like a garage there are very real carbon monoxide concerns to be aware of. Thankfully an efficient engine idling doesn't produce that many emissions in a short 10-15 minute time period which is all it really takes to warm up, so you can crack the garage door open, start the car, grab your gloves/coat/coffee and then go get in the car.

    I assume the climate scheduler won't turn on the engine ever. But maybe I'm wrong. I do figure the remote start function can and will start the engine if necessary because you have to manually intervene to have that happen and they probably figure someone doing that understands the dangers of doing so in a closed garage.... right?

    No to both. The climate scheduler does not start the engine and neither does the remote start through the FOB. The engine won't start either if you walk to the car and push the Ready then Defrost button if the car is still plugged. You have to unplug the car first for some reason.

    Perhaps the system disallows the battery relays from flipping while plugged in for some safety or damage prevention reason.

    ?? Gen 4 Prime - if equipped - apps Auto Start works while plugged in? or No?
    I'm not concerned that the engine doesn't start using the apps Auto Start feature.

    I know that Gen 4 Prime pre-conditioning works both while plugged in and unplugged. (unless the ECU overrides the feature, for whatever the reason(s). )

    That's fine. If it's really cold outside, and you're getting ready to leave your house, you can unplug it, make sure there's ventilation, and remote start the car. I guess it wasn't clear that I was trying to express that you can still treat it like a normal car for heating it early in the morning in the winter with one extra step if unplugging.

    I'm not following what you're saying in your first paragraph, but yes, Gen 4 Prime preconditioning works both while plugged in and unplugged... if the temperature is -10°C or above. Below that, no preconditioning. Oh, make sure you didn't forget to lock the doors because this will also prevent preconditioning from working?!?

    Except it's a plugin hybrid, I wish I didn't need to go outside to precondition it when it's cold. Luckily, we barely got real cold temperatures this year. I would have taken the Model 3 instead so I wouldn't have to deal with a cold interior.
