Ford & GM adopt the Tesla Supercharger network standard (NACS).

Tuesday I charged at a SuperCharger that had been upgraded to use the Magic Dock. Tesla is known for keeping the outside the same while changing the guts to make a significantly better product.

I wonder what stops them from being available, maybe the congestion?

Edit: I just checked around the ones I take and in Trenton, On, the 250KW Superchargers (12 stalls) aren't showing in the NACS map and according to the Tesla App, at the highest congestion, which is from noon to 8 pm, it says that most stalls are free, so congestion ain't it...

 

Ironically, that is precisely the opposite of what's needed now. From V3 to V4 is basically just swapping the cabinet (which adds a screen) and cord (which adds length).

 

I'm hanging on the likelihood of it being higher probability of non-Tesla use, making those locations better candidates for getting V4 upgrades sooner.

It makes sense to see Tesla positioning for the next round of NEVI funding, especially if those locations are phase-2 highway corridors. Keep in mind that the current business model is to lease land and supply equipment. The next stage in Tesla's master plan could be to offer those established locations for purchase to the lessor... who would be eligible for NEVI funding. Tesla would then become the service provider, collecting fees for each connection and providing contracted maintenance.

Remember, Tesla's business objective is to be an energy provider. The fact that most people think of Tesla as just an automaker prevents them from seeing that bigger picture.

 

Well yeah .... we're more & more, driving computers on wheels - that are in turn - being managed by huge servers. AND ... servers use vast amounts of energy - as do space X, twitter etc type organizations.

The recent Ford charging at a SuperCharger followed by a failed Bolt and Rivian suggests the VIN is required to be in a range or map that Supercharger manages. This makes sense as the current practice is to charge the owner's registered payment and keep a list to past charging. Of course, the vehicle must follow the charging protocol that is independent of the adapter.

My 2017 BMW i3-REx is unlikely to become SuperCharger compatible. BMW may choose not to include abandoned models or worse, they may no longer have the ability support the charging protocol on their legacy EVs.
