Help: Need Photos of Gen5 Prius 12volt

The last listed pic, name starts with BEC5.... includes two fuses for the two 12v+ wires terminated at the battery '+' lug. One is a 50A fuse, the other is a 150A fuse...just of interest to me.

 

I have a Gen2 2009 prius and changed out the 12v battery in it years ago. Still runs just fine. It is located in the same relative space in the rear of the car as the Gen5. It is a AGM battery. I replaced it with a vehicle specific Optima AGM battery.

 

It is EN LN1/DIN H4/BCI 140R. It is available at Walmart. Just make sure that it comes with the two exhaust-tube holes and a plug for the unused exhaust-tube hole. Walmart EverStart Maxx BCI 140R is equipped with the exhaust-tube holes and a plug for the unused exhaust-tube hole, and I believe it is a newer model than their DIN H4 model. It is made in Korea.

 

No, I did not say that they are the same battery. the Gen 2 is an AGM battery, the Gen 5 is a flood lead acid battery (maybe calcium lead acid) there is a difference in performance and charging routine. I would not interchange them without more info about the Toy battery charging routines. They just live in the same space in the two vehicles. I posted a PDF with the dimensions of the GS Yuasa LN1 battery used in the 2017 Prius. Its in another thread.

Here's a video of a 12v battery replacement project, starting near the pic of the top of the stock battery in a 2017 Gen4 battery that is located in the engine compartment. Note that it has the sane 345LN1-MF designation as the Gen5 PP battery locatedin the back hatch area of an 2024 PP XSE. Its CCA is marked 295, the PP Gen5 is marked 285 CCA. The Gen4 battery has removeable (6) plugs for topping off the lead acid livel, the gen 5 does not have these plugs. And note that the Gen4 battery fill plugs appear to have a small hole in the top of each plug . I would guess that these small holes allow H2 to exit the battery.

Here is @Tooly's 2023 Prius Prime XSE battery. Strangely, it has the same model number 345LN1-MF as my older battery, despite mine having the vent holes in caps and therefore not being suitable for trunk installation:



Here is the Walmart EverStart Maxx 140R with the proper vent holes and plug. You can see the red-plugged hole on the left and unplugged hole on the right; hence, it is suitable for trunk installation. The sulfuric acid must have leaked from another battery. The 95-minute reserve capacity is the equivalent of a 52-Ah capacity at @ 20-hour discharge, easily beating the factory-OEM Yuasa's 45-Ah capacity.





Chances are that the Toyota TrueStart DIN H4 does not have the proper vent holes and plug for trunk installation, and that's why the dealer is having a hard time getting a suitable OEM replacement.

No, not at all. Neither of the two Gen 2 battery options (the larger S46B24R and the smaller S34B20R) is of the group size EN LN1/DIN H4/BCI 140R as the Gen 4 and Gen 5 battery. Both Gen 2 battery options are much smaller in length and width and much taller in height than the Gen 4 and Gen 5 battery.

It looks like Gen 3 also uses the larger Gen 2 12-V-battery option (S46B24R by GS Yuasa).

The LN1 is the size indicator - length 207mm, width 175mm, height 190mm, according to Yuasa's table here:

There are at least four different battery-size standards: BCI (US), DIN (Germany), EN (EU), and JIS (Japan).

BCI 140R, DIN H4, and EN LN1 are equivalent sizes.

However, as I emphasized before, you need to make sure that there are side vent holes and a plug on the unused vent hole, as even the OEM GS Yuasa EN LN1 with the same model number did not have them until it was revised for Gen 5 Prius/Prius Prime trunk installation.

 

The premise of this thread is to gather sufficient dims to build a compatible battery, not score one?

 

Is the Y6 series of gs-yuasa battery the battery found in your 2023 PP ?

 

Not checked my own - I'm assuming it's the same as your pictures above. It's probably a custom part; I'm just using that chart for the size table. Maybe the "P1" you can see in the pictures is the model designation?
