What are you reading?

I was taken with Helprin's writing style, and so I thought I'd try another one.

I have an offer to renew my Audible membership for $7 a month for 3 months - meaning that I can buy 3 audio books for $7 apiece.

Thinking about it, since I've been waiting for......

 

we watched this movie on netflix:

leave the world behind 81314956

it was so awful, i have to read the book to try and understand why the obamas would produce it, and why the actors accepted the roles.
picking it up today at the library, hoping hollywood butchered it.

some of the worst dialog (or non dialog) i have ever heard. the whole plot is atrocious

Somehow Kurt Andersen (NOT to be confused with the football coach) has failed to appear on my radar scope.

I'll give him a toss, although not the title listed above.

Interesting choice for a Foreword, BTW.
It will be interesting to see how Kurt c-2009 sounds in 2024, and yes....it's a harsh test.

My own 'thoughts' in 2009 - before my first exposure to this new Prius thing and when most people hadn't bought their first iPhone, are DIFFERENT than they are now......

i had no idea shawshank redemption was a book, what a great movie! and stephen king no less, doesn't sound like his genre.
i'm going to have to give it a read.

 

It's a very short book, so it will not take you very long.
Read The Green Mile as well.

I always try to read before I watch, and it seldom fails to add depth to the story.

Someone smarter than me once said:
If you want a new idea, read an old book.

 

Another great movie. I try to read first as well, but saw ‘all the light you cannot see’ first, and the book was still excellent.

Wait time: About 6 weeks.....

I do not have a Netflix account and I spend less than an hour a day watching video on screens - so I am in little danger of seeing it before I read it.

 

i liked 'all the light we cannot see' so much, our daughter gave me two other anthony doerr books for Christmas.
the first one, 'about grace', is horrible. bad story and worse writing. goodreads describes it as luminous prose. i think that's my problem.

Popular doesn’t always mean a good personal experience, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, but our tastes seem dramatically different.
I do like straight forward storytelling and simple dialogue, which I think is the reason I’m disliking the doerr book I’m now struggling with.

 

What was the other one?

About Grace has a 14 week wait and I'm not really into short stories.
My failing.

Another one 'Cloud Cuckoo Land' seems a little sketch and it also has a 14-week lead time.

 

About grace is 400 pages of small print agony.
I would have given up after a hundred if it wasn’t a gift.
Reviews on goodreads are mixed. Some love it, some hate it, not too many in the middle.
Cuckoo is next, hoping for better.
