    Cars are 3-5 year projects......

Company Announcements are shorter term things.

That's actually okay... with their decision to try a home-grown navigation and entertainment system, their 2025-2029 output was already doomed be practice for the crusher anyway.

But having good hybrids hit around the same time they get their dashboards working? They could be on to something.

GM is already building a PHEV in Brazil. The could simply expand production. Any needed changes will likely be minor.
This should take much less time than starting a project from scratch.

They use different fuels in Brazil, and their cars might be different than North America Spec models.

    There's also demand and inflation.
$3 in 2020 is equal to about - what?
    $3.40 in 'today dollars?'

Adjust your destination backwards and re-calculate.
People in the US are already buckling under super high car prices, higher than expected borrowing costs, and the stank of all of the BEV stories following the last cold snap.
Show them a car with a charging plug door and a $10,000 up-charge and they might get......um....'cold feet.'
Throw in a change in US Administration and tax kickbacks and China's economic woes and you have a perfect recipe for a PHEV................

............being an 'option' on the 'limited' Denali++ trim. ;)

Or restyle the Buick Velite 6 in China like they did with the Velite 7 for the Bolt EUV.

This article ... "lots of people don't want ev's". Lots of people don't want pickup trucks too by the number sitting on car lots with $75,000 price tags. Saying people don't want EV's has been the Toyota disinformation for how many decades now?
I thought we're not supposed to talk about GM utilizing the volt system because it causes John a lot of stress -
    ;)
If they float this idea into production, making it (for example) into a medium/small suv, it could be a hit - what with cheaper battery chemistries now days. The drop in those costs at least offsets our seriously deflated dollar, to some degree

That is CDN dollars, converts to around $36,130 USD.

For perspective though, the roll-it-off-the-lot cash price for our '10 Touring* model was around $32K CDN, converts to around $23,880 USD.

    * Not the priciest trim level, but getting there. Was sort-of comparable to US level V or 5, but stripped down: had the LED headlights with washers, fog lights, HomeLink rearview mirror, OEM 17" rims, and JBL 6 disc sound system, but did not have radar cruise and some other advanced electronic features.

Gm better be sure dealers really want hybrids, and aren’t just reacting to the failing ev plan.
Seems to me gm is doing fine with gassers.
Hybrids are a big undertaking, look how long it has taken Toyota, and it’s pretty much their specialty.
Could end up being another money pit for gm.

Right, they don’t want a non Tesla ev, although Hyundai had a decent year.
And gm sold a lot of bolts due to low prices and tax credits, but that wasn’t a profitable model

Many complaints about dead 12V battery on these though and a class action because Levels 2 charging can take way longer than advertised because of overheating charge port.

I'll still stay clear from them for the time being. It's too early to tell if the agressive charge curve they're using won't affect the longevity of their battery. As someone was quoted $50,000 to replace a battery in a Ioniq5, I want it to be long lasting lol.

I'll try to calm you down and walk you back from the ledge.

Though not an EV, we own a PHEV from a Korean auto manufacturer - after 5 years and now close to 60,000 miles it charges fine as it always has from the first day - no hybrid problems- range is close to when it was new and still exceeds the new EPA mileage rating for all electric mode- dead certain reliable with no problems. Battery is holding up fine.

WALK BACK FROM THE CLIFF EDGE - DON'T JUMP!

but if governments continue to restrict & prohibit straight gassers (eg: 40 mile EV minimum), while permitting PHEV's then GM at a minimum may just be trying to interpret the writing on the wall.
