Our Gen 3, Trim V has long bothered us with a display that doesn't seem to automatically adjust brightness from day to night. Is this not a basic feature that it should have or have? Believe it's highly likely we've missed that option in the settings, but if others can confirm, that would be nice. Driving at night with a white map creates substantial glare/distraction in the driver's visual field. Thank you.

Did you or someone else accidentally leave the MFD in "Day Mode"? It should auto dim to a black map when the ambient light is low.

I've searched for an auto-dim option; where in the menu is it located; or is it a physical switch?

Let’s see if I can remember.

Press DISP and there should be an on-screen button labelled “Day Mode”. Make sure that’s off “there’s a vertical line to indicate a “light””

I was wishing that were the case. Would you expect this to apply to a 2010 (Trim V)? Hitting DISP only gives us the screen you see in my profile pic. Have scoured through all the other settings in setup — unfortunately, still not seeing it.

When my 2010 was still stock, the MFD simply flipped from day to night mode when I turned the taillights or headlights on, the same time the speedometer goes from full brightness to wherever its dimmer is set.

Since I added the auto headlights mod, the flip to night mode happens according to the dashboard light sensor.

When the auto headlights feature is hooked up, there is one more thing that can happen that isn't possible with the manual control: right at not-quite-dark, dawn or dusk times, the auto lights feature can put the taillights and headlights on but leave the speedometer and MFD in day mode for easier reading. They'll switch to dim and night mode when it's a little darker out than that.

Found the dimmer - this is a parent's car which I only drive a few times a year upon returns to the US, hence my lack of familiarity. The dimmer has a notched position at one end of its range, which locks the display into day mode. Was not aware of this. Mods sound interesting though.

There's also a button adjacent the dimmer panel; its function is unclear — fog lights? Graphic bore odd resemblance to that of dryer mode on a Japanese bidet...

If you haven't got a picture, you'll need about 976 more words of description.

    That washes your headlights.

Using the dimmer tonight, rolled.out of the notch position, it dims the instrument display far too much, even at its brightest position. Coupled with a need to use headlights during daytime long-distance freeway driving, it's clear the auto dim is too extreme — almost illegible. Guess it just needs to be manually operated but a parent doesn't like to modify settings.

Give the parent the gift of the auto headlight mod. Then the instruments stay bright when you have the lights on and it isn't very dark out.
