2011 Prius with knocking sound. No check engine codes, nothing showing up on scanner. So far we have tried the following:

    1. The headgasket, timing chain, and rod bearings were replaced.
    2. The egr was cleaned to like new. The sound continues when the egr is unplugged.
    3. The knocking speed rate increases with the rpm.
    4. No metal shavings anywhere when the engine was disassembled.

I recorded the noise, heres the link:

Any ideas what this could be? How can I diagnose where the noise is coming from? What else do I look for?

The normal sewing machine sound of a Prius engine is much louder in this one. I'm thinking something didn't get addressed with your valve train during the rebuild.

Diagnosing where the sound is coming from:

An old mechanics's trick is to use a long-handled screwdriver as a sound probe. Put the tip of the screwdriver at various places, and monitor the vibrations at the handle with your hand (or ear). In the case of an old-fashioned engine, if you suspect bad bearings in the alternator, probe the alternator. If the vibrations in the handle don't correspond to the noise, it's (probably) not the alternator - probe the power steering, A/C compressor, water pump, whatever.

The sound looks like it's similar to mine and I didn't do anything to the valve train I just replaced the engine and it was rock solid steady quiet for close to a year and then this my eyes and my video go right in between the engine and the transmission You seem to be sitting up in the front with the camera a lot Is there a reason for that It looks like your engine is running dead set solid smooth notice when the clicking is going on the engine's not bouncing around this is exactly what I have right now I have no idea another guy on here disconnected the EGR and the noise went away a similar type of noise I didn't work on my car I'm thinking I've got to pull the transmission out and check the springs on the torque plate or see that the torque plate flywheel section thereof is bolted securely to the crankshaft or something My eyes are drawn right to the mating points of the engine and transmission in my video yours seem to want to go to cylinder number one or the right side of the car but it doesn't look like seemingly that's where the noise is emanating from.

It is true that the dampener will fail if you live with a rough running bad headgasket for a while but not sure how a bad dampener would make a noise that matches engine RPM?

I was thinking the same. It doesn’t sound like a knock per se, but a valve train thing…like a louder normal sound. But I can’t isolate it and its frustrating the hell out of me.

Sticking things in a valve train will often make that kind of noise as they catch up when they don't need to if you will and they make that clacking noise that gets faster with the faster you read the engine That's why mine noise is a little different because it doesn't really get faster and it doesn't seem like it's in the valve train at all where this one that's quite possible.

Probably pulling the valve cover and slowly rotating the engine would help you figure it out. Or just live with it until something breaks, which is the easiest way to find out, but probably more expensive to repair.

The hydraulic adjusters are supplied with oil, so even if they were installed without it, they shouldn't stay that way.

They contain little check valves that are supposed to keep them from losing oil too quickly; the repair manual shows a way of testing them.

Last link in my signature has the entire engine section. Pretty sure the lifter test is in there, somewhere.

Im confident this isnt my issue. Thats not the sound its making. My timing chain is new and my chain guide is undamaged.

I put the 16 new lash adjusters in last night, Im gonna button it up tomorrow morning before work and pray to all the gods that fixes the issue.

Any ideas as to why it broke? Torque spec is 20 lb/ft for those; see last link in my signature.

No idea, I had it set to 20 lb/ft. Maybe they werent supposed to be reused? How bad is it if I just leave it in there broken…

    **edit*
I torqued them to 27 lb/ft, thats what the repair manual says!
