2014 oil usage 2 and 1/2 quarts in 4000 miles

    Wow, this thread seems to be running with the wheels off. Car care nut says an engine cleaner might help, but he doesn’t recommend one. Any thoughts on that?

    I would generally tend to agree with that statement when I'm approaching $300,000 miles I generally know I'm going to six because the car is at 3 and I have it that's why it's going to 6:00 It wouldn't make it to the three if it wasn't going to go the full distance. That's generally how it's worked out so far I have a few of these things that are over the 300k and I'm not worried about them getting to six other than an accident or a wreck and then I'll just move everything over to another chassis or not so at 289,000 mi and the cars that we drive here they're ready to go on but in some of these cars that I'm looking at in this forum at the 289,000 they better be getting out of them or they should have been out of them about 90,000 mi ago but hey they don't have a car payment and the car's still running burning oil or not who cares You're thinking about another vehicle and looking and waiting maybe the next choice you make will go long. Maybe not to some it just may not matter.

    I'd say that depends where he is and federal emissions people aren't going to come after one person living in Iowa or what have you they generally go after shops that are doing these kind of modifications for what money.! Money is what gets you in trouble if you're taking money to do this kind of stuff you can get dinged If you're doing it at your house on the weekend goofing off on your own mess pretty much no consequence. I live in the county in North Carolina that has no emissions I have a safety only inspection I can have a straight pipe where my catalytic converter goes maybe not federally legal but the federalis aren't going to miss with a stupid guy in North Carolina at his house. When they do I'll let you know and to get around this usually you take your cat off the car you ram the brick out vacuum it out make sure it's clear shake it make sure it doesn't make any noise reinstall the assembly hook up your water lines and let it rip then you can fool the downstream sensor with whatever and you're off and running. As far as a sniffer test goes when I was removing my cats off my supras back in 1985 and Western Massachusetts when I had to go get my emissions testing done my gutted cat 5M GTE Toyota motor yeah this one had a turbo. Would still pass the sniff test with the cat gutted so what am I making more dirty? Didn't make sense to me either

    I'm assuming you're joking, but no I'm implying that it clearly takes a while for a cat to get oil poisoned. What other components are you going to damage? EGR system is going to need to be cleaned regularly anyways.

    You'll find opinions both ways on this. I've done several engine cleans and never had much results. Maybe it works if it's the piston rings and you catch it early enough? Between a few engine cleans and switching back to 5k oil changes I do feel like I'm burning slightly less oil, but I haven't taken the time to figure out if I really am.

    well gosh, that's your first problem..watching that channel. His most recent one on the Gen 4 Prius heater control valve issue (which he still didn't address in name in the video) is a testament to how little he actually knows about the Prius.

    No not at all, I'm sure Illinois is just as EPA strict as my state and it's illegal. That is a Federal Crime.

    Is this still part of the joke? Driving a car that’s burning oil is a federal crime? I’m so confused right now. Nowhere have I ever said or even implied that I’m driving without a cat, as was made expressly clear by my last post. Sorry if I hurt your feelings by offering a counter argument to your opinion.

    Could be leaking out the backside of the timing cover?

    PCV? Take off the intake and look through the throttle body for oil. If there is oil in there, that does mean it's coming from the PCV but, it might not actually mean the PCV is bad. It could be you have so much blowby that it's sending the water weight 0w20 oil right on through. So not only are you burning oil through the piston rings that cause the excessive blowby, it's sucking it from the intake as well.

    Could try the BG engine restore kit. It's about $300 and 3-4hrs time. It's hard to do on the hybrid.

    I did that, with the fuel and then oil additive. 0w40 European Car Formula. The next tank I put in Cataclean. Then 100~ miles later, I did GDI valve cleaner. Then changed the oil to 10w40 GTX blend after I completed that process.

    Half of that was for the Piston rings, the other half was for the Catalytic converter .01volt from throwing a code. Then thicker oil. It's all a effort to buy time. At this time I'm not sure how effective it is. It did kinda kill mpg but that's the tradeoff. Mines a 2010 with 199.8k. I don't ever want to own another hybrid and much less a EV after this experience... Sorry everyone.

    Over the last several days I have made a point to try and drive very sensible. For instance, I went a 10,000 mile stretch recently with averaging over 50 miles a gallon. I drive about 55 miles to work, where the speed limit is 55 all the way. It is a rural stretch, and only recently have a really started zooming past and skipping people. For instance. It wouldn’t be uncommon to skate up to 80 real quick and pass a tractor or someone slow. But I’ve tried to drive more sensible in the last several days, including I got out in the snow and Uber for about 300 miles, with no noticeable Oil use at all.

    Every car I’ve ever had that leaked a fluid, I saw it somewhere. I don’t have a concrete drive, I have asphalt at my home, so maybe. But usually something would drip underneath the car if there was a leak somewhere..

    I pretty much explained it. He knows exactly what issues the Prius has and is just creating content for views and likes. (Not that there's anything wrong with that). This coolant/heater control valve issue has been happening several years now, it's not a mystery but he plays coy and pretends he's shocked at what's happening..it's not entertaining for me, but maybe for the uneducated. (At least he's bringing attention to the issue but it's smoke and mirrors for his channel).

    It's been my experience that how you drive the Prius, changes how it consumes oil. One upon a I thought I was burning oil so I went on a 300 mile highway road trip. Honestly kinda racing it. 80-90mph... Didn't lose a drop of oil. However if I would drive that 300miles over a months time, my 14 mile round trip for work, I would lose oil.

    I assume it's part of heat cycling the engine and the stop and go revs up the engine more. Cruising at 70mph at 1,400rpm is way easier on the engine. Also the back side of my engine on the timing cover side is a mess. I've never seen any oil drops on the ground but it's pretty messy in there.

    Higher vacuum at lower rpms will suck more oil past the rings. At wide open throttle or close to it vacuum is lower.

    A Prius engine runs with fairly low manifold vacuum most of the time over a wide range of engine speeds, except when power demand is very low (including idling when cold). That's a major reason why it's so much more efficient than engines allowed to spin at moderate speeds with high vacuum, which wastes energy through both pumping losses and friction loss.
