My 2013 Prius has run into some braking issues and I'm wondering if this shop is looking to rip me off.

    Useful info
    • The car is at ~125,000 miles
    • The skid, brake, and ABS lights are lit up in the dash
    • The car has been inspected by a Toyota dealership and the recommendation to replace the brake booster was consistent. The reservoir and pump repairs where not mentioned but may have been part of the fix. Their repair estimate was around ~$4,000.
    • This repair (with this shop) was set up via RepairPal and the quote for this fix was ~$1,200. The estimate they've provided is double that original quote.
    • Sadly, this issue surfaced right after a relevant Toyota recall repair ended and I was unaware of this until it was examined. I did call Toyota and confirm that no mail had been sent to my address to inform me of this issue. I will be submitting a request for reimbursement, but I'm not sure if this will be accepted
    • The estimate

It generally boils down to this this is a generation 3 You have two parts to the brake system they're both expensive parts about 748 a pop so that's about $1,500 just for the parts new from Toyota generally you don't want to be doing this with used parts as you're paying about five or $600 in labor If the part doesn't work out the place may give you another two pieces but they're not going to pay for the labor you just lost out on so unless you're doing this yourself or unless you're smart enough to get out of this car at this point which it might be an option because they're certainly not worth it to me but that's personal so whatever is going on here for $1,200 they're replacing one part and if they're diagnostic skills are not seriously up to snuff as soon as they get that all back together they're going to still have lights on until you you need the other 748 part that you have a budgeted for I'm not sure what the reservoir business is or any of this other stuff on the list unless they're charging you $125 to clean the reservoir replace the reservoir exactly for what reason Is it broken generally not The brake system doesn't explode like the air conditioning system and send metal shards all through the line making you replace everything in the system so I'm not sure how this shop is coming up with anything to do with the reservoir. Generally it's the two major parts they generally have to come from Toyota generally you buy them online and have them sent to the store to get the best discount lot of shops don't know this and don't care if they save you money. So there's a lot of factors at play here so you better review your business and maybe find out why the shop doesn't want to replace both of the expensive parts that may not be saving you money is my point It usually isn't in a lot of these generation threes that's why they are so costly to keep on the road more or less maybe not like a Gallardo but costly enough in my world.

it is unlikely that they will go beyond the warranty period which they already extended to 10 years.

$2,500. is about the going price.

i hope toyota helps you out!

I think I follow what you're getting at. Unfortunately, the shop isn't being too transparent on what is or isn't messed up and keeps referring to a vague TSB recommendation, but I can't seem to track down any TSBs that mention that a reservoir fix is needed in this situation. I've listed two of those down below. (Can't post links or PDFs for some reason...) Beyond that, considering car prices are still in flux these days, I'm just not sure if I should eat the $125 cost and just trade this thing in for a new vehicle.

Were you given any of the trouble codes that the dealership or the other mechanic found?

Unfortunately, the dealership didn't get any codes and the independent shop won't pass along any info without me being there in person (which seems extremely odd).

You do not want to own it to ZZ Atkinson cycle engine vehicle and I'm thinking probably not the newer 2 l either but will have yet to see if you must have a hybrid just because or whatever reason buy a generation 2 you've got wide range of latitude and prices and all that You can get some of them for nothing drive the hell out of them like the five or 600,000 pretty easily you'll never do that with the generation 3 or 4 they are the kind you get rid of it 130 140 and start squirming as you get to 150 in hopes somebody's coming to get it and then if you don't 160 to 170 big failures can be right there at your doorstep and then you can't sell it. If you really don't need the Prius and you want high gas mileage get a Yaris cute little car decent mileage zippy in the city whatever.

Cars are complex machines. Complex machines break. Complex. Machines are complex to fix. Things that are complex to fix. Cost a lot of money. Why does the common man think this is not so? Is it because it's in your favor or not to see this?

As complex as you allow them to be really. Things are actually seemingly to me pretty simple You just have to look and see what you got and mess with it and get it and then you know having information such as repair manuals that you can physically open and look at makes a big difference I don't care what they tell me about all this computer crap trying to read and use a four manual set on a tablet or a computer is a royal pain in the butt except when you're searching for something you can instantly bring up the paragraph but other than that unless you have a 27-in screen where you can put four pages up at once or something it's a mess. Having the four manual set sitting right in front of me on the rack right above the desk makes things much quicker etc.
