Hello just sharing my experience on EGR & COOLER CLEANING , 2014 gen3 Toyota Prius right hand drive from uk I managed to take apart & put back without removing the windscreen cowl & the bottom engine cover , There was plenty space , note this is a uk right hand drive model , I finally got it done , Could not have done without you guys tips , Mendels tip about draining 2 quarter coolant , & the bolt from hell , I brought a used cooler of eBay £20 & cleaned before start , Everything including egr & cooler completely caked , few photos to share , had to finish in dark in end nut from hell I brought a angled flex head 3/8 ratchet &12 mm deep socket once figured out it came off easy , no ext for ratchet just reached , All rest was straight forward , 1 hiccup I dropped the rear cooler gasket , I forgot about it until too late, it dropped down bottom , luckily I found it near the engine oil service window, few clips & got it back about 1/2 hour looking , Nut from hell couldn’t remove the stud in situ with everything there , I did remove it after & left it off for good , That area too tight , Few small cuts on hand. I did the manifold 5-6 months ago , looks already dirty why is that ? That’s for another day much easier . About 4 hrs work time including bleeding which took about 1 hr on maintenance mode for fan to turn on twice ,left cap open until fan turns on , maybe that’s why ! thank you everyone in this forum , you guys are gold honestly , really appreciate.
Yeah with the lower stud for egr cooler now removed, for next time you will be able to leave the rearmost cooler studs installed, which keeps that rear gasket from falling off, since the cooler can then be pulled straight forward, with the gasket securely on the stud threads. There is a metal tube running over the the EGR components: loosen the hold-down bolt on it's support bracket and it can be pushed up enough for the valve/cooler to pass under.
Thanks , Mendel yourself & Nuts about bolts great tips for helping & it gave me confidence to do it myself, I am no mechanic, But I don’t trust these street garages I did the water pump as well in 2 days , As I shared the impeller was cracked & a lot harder to turn , Slight tingle my head didn’t change the thermostat, Toyota one expensive, didn’t want aftermarket, Recon I should change it as preventative?? But Mendels recommendation from amayama £30 sounds great , 2 weeks deliver might try that I hope my overheating I was having has been solved ,
Small 3/8 socket would make that nut and stud easy to remove. I didn't know which one eveyone was talking about until someone showed a photo. It's easy with the proper tools. And you really just have to loosen the nut, then remove the stud. Also, there is no reason to run the engine in maintainence mode. Just fill very slowly. And a small portion at a time. This allow the coolant to push out the air.
When I’ve cleaned ours (twice now), I drained 2 quarts (well, liters) coolant preemptively, and when all was done just slowly poured it back into reservoir, with the engine coolant vent spigot opened, at least till coolant started spilling out. That’s all, no subsequent run in maintenance mode. The coolant was a little high in reservoir, but settled down to FULL line after a few drives.
Hello I’m not sure which is the spigot vent , How to know for sure when air is out , this is new experience for me , but I heard get it wrong & engine overheat also I’m wondering the lower cooler bracket will it make any rattle noise , & with cleaned improved airflow does the ecu need any resetting just wondering, I have got a lot more to do like spark plugs not changed ,& transmission oil & brake fluid all to do , Will see how brave I feel only done some short trips feels little better thanks
Ah yours is 2014; Toyota deleted the vent by your year, so just ignore that. Yeah refilling the reservoir slowly and squeezing the hoses, then a few days driving, seem to be all that's needed. No. Don't really know, but doubt it.
Hello guys update Been driving few days now Car runs a lot stronger now , However I’m experiencing some very light lumpy while maintaining speed about 5-10 % lumpy , around all speed ,didn’t notice this before Not a minor issue but is bothering, could be my mind , Could it be the intake manifold ! the egr I didn’t open the spring when cleaning Manifold clean about 5 months ago but looked dirty this time , Should I disconnect battery to reset ecu ? thanks
