Happy to report I got Apple Carplay working wirelesly in my Gen4 (2022) Used an adapter called Carlinkit. This was version 4 (the blue one). It got a little stuck at the connecting phase but a downgrade of the firmware to a previous version (very straight forward to do) fixed this. Stable connection and the head unit sorts itself out within around 20 seconds ( about 15 seconds longer than a standard Bluetooth connection) at startup. This adapter only works on cars fitted with the wired version of carplay and/or Android auto.
I'll second this, I bought the same last week and it arrived today. No firmware fiddling for me, just plug up and go. It added Android Auto to my son's 2020 awd-e for $60 and near zero effort - way easier than swapping head units.
I'm using Carlinkit V4 and an Android V13 phone.....it was plug and play with no issues. Google maps navigation via Android Auto was the key feature I was after and I got it. I'm still exploring the whole Android Auto feature set, but for $40, it was a worthwhile purchase. I haven't quite figured out how to do the firmware update though. Plus, realize that when your cellphone is connected to the dongle via wifi....you can't get your internet from wifi at the same time. Leaving only cellphone mobile data open for internet connection.
You can get full-on wired and wireless carplay for not much more with the "Carabc" (unbranded Grom unit) from amazon; CARABC丨Elevate Your Driving Experience with CarPlay Integration!
tried this, found it overides the built in amp, sounded worse, and when removed, bricks the car's ability to use the reverse camera.
For me the backup camera doesn't work unless you wait about 10 seconds after "START". I tend to turn on the card and immediately go into reverse and it can be rather frustrating. Fun gimmick for about a month.
