I didn’t bleed the coolant properly so the trapped air caused the thermostat to not open Correctly. I changed the thermostat and drilled out the jiggle pin in it. This is a problem that happens to other DIYers. Senior users have disproven that removing the jiggle pin does anything. My engine doesn’t overheat but I still hear a slush as coolant goes through the drilled out thermostat.

Drilling the hole allowed coolant to slowly pass through while filling to keep air pockets out.
If you fill the Prius slowly, you won't have the air pockets. I haven't had air pockets in any car
I filled since I started filling slowly.

If you still hear water slushing, you're heater valve may be sticking or you have air in your system.
I still have the original thermostat. 313,900 miles.....

I am not sure why you drilled the jinggle pin. I would get another thermostat, install it properly and refill it with the old clean coolant. I did drain the radiator once and refill it without any issues. I went to Maintenance mode, start the engines and open the heater until hot air flowed into the cabin. There is no sloshing sound at all. You can massage the radiator hoses and prevent any air bubble trapped there. There is no bleeding procedure I know off for Prius/Corolla since it is not a common issues.

It was a suggestion in older threads by users when they were figuring out plumbing gen 3 with a gen 4 motor. I’m not suggesting to do it. There is obviously a procedure if there’s a bleed valve on your car(open the bleed valve, fill slowly) Not a mechanic so I just did whatever to prevent another blown head gasket. Don’t really care if I hear swishing coolant since it’s not doing anything adverse. When it’s time to change the coolant again I’ll probably change the thermostat housing and temp sensor.

just hit 10,000 miles on my “new” engine. Running great and slightly better mpg!

would recommend to anyone with high mile engines with headgasket issues if you can get an affordable JDM gen 4 engine.

Hope it lasts a long time. And won't burn oil!

A lot of gen 4 engine transplants seem to incur overheating.

Stilling running on the 4th engine. Hot weather is fine, no overheating. Getting about 55-56 mpg on the original 10 year old battery. About 40k miles on the “new” engine.
