I would suggest going to the Public Citizen website and investigating this websites agenda very carefully before making any lifestyle decisions on that article.

Toyota and other companies don't make public health and climate decisions - in the US government agencies make these decisions and generally these are influenced by the people who elected these public officials. If you want to look at where the problem is a mirror is an excellent place to start.

In the US less than 1/2 the population takes the time to vote and a number of these would be people who foolishly vote for a party rather than the quality of the person running or their platform.

I agree with the first and third sentence.
However, lobbyists have a very large influence on our elected officials.
Have you seen the changes Pharmaceutical companies made to government regulations? Yes, the changes are made by gov officials. More often than not, it is the exact text given to them by lobbyists.

The larger the company/organization, the more influence.

Here is a 60 Minutes piece on the Opioid crisis. It is a complicated issue with plenty of bad actors.

i wouldn't sell my prius yet, seems a bit of a hit piece. what are you going to replace it with?

it's hard to believe toyota is the only one fighting emissions standards.

if you look at sales, no one is really doing a good job of moving away from gas yrt, and that's partly a demand problem as well.
i would like to know more about the 180 million dollar fine for violating clean air regulations, first i've heard of it.

    Looks fishy to me.

This is one individual whining that Toyota won't do what they want, and they're trying to look bigger than an individual potential buyer.

While I can relate to the desire for a strong lineup of Toyota EVs, I think this action is just disingenuous noise.

Zythryn- it is undeniable that the politicians make the changes lobbyist want at times - a point might be who continues to foolishly vote and elect these people who let lobbyist influence them.

Yes educate yourself and vote for a person who best represents you. If both are bad choices maybe we have to vote for the least bad one.

I understand your frustration because I feel that way sometimes too. I take some consolation that generally our local and state races have good people who run for office but the differences may be their platforms and policies. In those cases getting to know the individuals through exposure and listening to them is helpful. Our local newspaper does a great job of publishing Candidate profiles and positions and our Public TV network is outstanding at presenting the statewide candidates in interviews and debates.

I didn’t say I was selling my Prius, just that we wouldn’t repeat the same mistake twice. If you dig past the typical main news outlets (regardless of political party affiliation) you find the demand is significantly higher than reported.

Perhaps it is time to quit accepting the “least bad one” idea shoved down our throats by the very same people who continue to screw things up. We have found that voting with our pocket book (as the saying goes) often leads to better results.

As far as the published candidate profiles, where we live they are basically useless. Our area recently elected a new representative who shortly after the election sent out questionnaires with some really ignorant questions (based on his platform). So we and some of our colleagues called him on it, explaining we would actively engage in insuring his one term career if he “didn’t get his head out of…”. Amazingly he actually sent out an apology and is improving his behavior. We made sure to remind him we were and would continue to monitor his behavior.
We the people have been neglecting our responsibility by voting “the less of two evils”.

That is actually a very sizable organization and supported by many, many voters. Toyota talks a talk that they aren’t walking (IMHO).

AGREE! 100%! And now we are all paying the price. We are approaching another election where both parties will give us no real option. To paraphrase “Houston, we are screwed”.

Well they ought to come up with a better spokesperson for their messaging. Opening it with citations of personal history "...I grew up surrounded by the Toyota Prius..." gives them a very individual voice.

And focusing on a single automaker just looks weird.

If it really is a huge group of people, why get so hung up on the actions of one company? They ought to be going after the entire industry.

I'm happy to take you at your word that it really is a large group trying to do a good thing, but the statement itself came out like this:

special interests are always looking to spin and get others spinning around their core issue.
climate change is here and is not going away anytime soon no matter how much money is spent on it.
It's a BIG problem, much like other BIG problems, it's complicated and still not well understood by the experts.
If fossil fuels https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil_fuel are the biggest reason for climate change than it should be clear to everyone what we are doing everyday we use them and that we are to blame for our climate changing. If we don't ( like ) being held accountable, each and everyone should change what we can - about what we do that contributes to the problem, like choose another make car that fits our needs better than the one we currently use.

I searched the first emboldened text in the linked article "Toyota is ranked the company with the third most negative impact in the world on climate policy" and from the hits listed it pretty obvious to me which lobby the report is being forwarded to us by (or) for us to buy into.

Meanwhile, almost every car company or spin off company seems to be racing to build the biggest most resource hungry luxury auto they can ( put ) together and ( push ) off the line be it ICE or Electric.

My question is how is that kind of behavior having an effect on the future of personal use of automobiles?
Much less the other Big problems to go along with that type of thinking that pushes money and power down out throats even after we've had a fat meal of it for breakfast and lunch already.

Should I even bother to note Toyota is involved with research that we in the US rarely hear about and sometimes don't even understand why that research is still ongoing. All we seem to hear about in this country is what's important to us in our race to be the biggest, wealthiest and most powerful country on the planet to protect our freedom to choose how to battle the Big problems, that don't appear to me to be getting any smaller no matter how many studies are done on any of the Big problems.

I may be misinformed, but how many other automakers are dragging their feet on EV’s.

To me, the article was just another bashing of Toyota for being so behind on ev’s.
I wish they would have started pushing the envelope long before this, but what’s done is done.
Every individual has to choose what car company(s) to support with their purchases.
Toyota does have a bev, but there is a lot more to environmental pollution than meets the eye, and I doubt there are any carmakers who can claim superiority, except maybe Tesla, IDK.
These are all for profit businesses, and they have a lot of people to answer to.

Ya Think. That’s my point. As long as I’m willing to help them make a profit on current behavior I no better than them.
