Twenty some years ago, a gallon of gas would cost $10 to $15 if all the extenalities were accounted for. Wonder what it be today.

My present cost is about $3.50 per gallon.

If you figured in all the trillions of dollars we're going to spend on rebuilding from more severe weather disasters due to climate change, gas would cost more than $100 a gallon.

    If you look at the organization that funded this, "realization" - that electric cars are this expensive to run gas equivalent - this wiki will make it much easier to understand;

    Follow the money
Like Gomer Pyle used to say, surprise surprise surprise.

Up until 2018 both of our cars were 100% EV. Both were powered by rooftop solar & each month our utility bill would pretty much zero out ... which included the operation of house utilities (central air - oven & cooktop etc).

According to the linked article's logic - it must have cost us a million dollars a year "gasoline equivalent" to run our house electric.
    :p

You were smart - charging you car with solar is the only smart thing to do. Sure there are capital costs but that’s all

Not $17.33 at my free to me charging spots. If gas was $17.33/gal maybe the suburbans would have to slow down to 80 on the freeways. They probably wouldn’t but talk a lot on who is to blame for high gas.

Reminds me of the many bogus Prius 'papers' we've fact checked before:

In 2007, CNW published a study called Dust to Dust which reports the results of a life cycle analysis that compared the environmental impact of a Toyota Prius and a Hummer H3. The report claims that the Prius has a greater environmental impact than the H3.

Robert Llewellyn did a good job, 12 years ago, covering how gasoline is made:

But where does your electricity come from? That process isn't pristine either.

maybe not, but it is improving rapidly. there's no panacea, but perhaps someone can point out the downside of reneables and compare to gasoline production.

I have actually taught an engineering course called "Green Power Generation" :)

I find the Prius to be as green as the full EVs at a lower cost of ownership and convenient to drive for 1000 mile trips to visit family.

and what kind of ev(s) have you owned & for how long?

Majority of folks prefer to fly rather than punish a family by putting them into ANY kind of on a 2000 mile round trip visit. How many of those giant drives have you made in a EV?

I'm 80 years old and don't buy cars very often so I'll see what's available when I am 90. Gas cars have gotten much cleaner in the past 20 years. Besides, I do not view carbon dioxide as a pollutant unlike those who continuously frighten people about "Man Made Global Warming"

None as they all cost more than I wish to pay for a car.
My wife and I make several long trips each year by car. We no longer fly when the trip can be driven comfortably in two days. That way we control our schedule. We both spent many years flying around the world for work and grew tired of being treated poorly by airlines.

    Curious:
    • What block-to-block time? - I can do 1,000 miles in 24 hours but I prefer 12-14 hours, ~750 mi, with a sleep over motel having free breakfast and charging.
    • Solo or a second driver? - I have autopilot and full self driving to offload a lot of the fatiguing parts. But a second driver would let each 'cat nap' over longer segments.
I will confirm a Prius has 'long legs' for 1,000 mi trips in a 24 hour period. But having driver assist systems makes it a lot more pleasant upon arrival.

i might say 80years old explains gasoline bias, but many of us oldsters see the writing on the wall.

i still prefer a hybrid for long trips, but that will change eventually as well.
