How are these people on Fuelly getting such bad MPG's???

    Well this was a fun read. Thanks. Obviously it wasn’t an AWD but this is helping me feel a little better.

    I would think the AWD would only affect mileage when it’s activated, right? AWD motor is only a fraction of the weight of the cargo they loaded that Limited with. Plus the Limited FWD has 19 inch tires too.

    Depending on the type of motor Toyota used at the rear, there could be additional drag caused by it.

    That was a really poor attempt at getting bad mileage in a Prius. Anyone that's been around PC for a number of years remembers Jeremy Clarkson showing you could get as poor as 17MPG with very little effort.



    Disregarding Clarkson is an ignorant tool - the folks at torque couldn't even get into the 30s? Wow - talk about delegitimizing their abilities .....

    Clarkson has always hated the Prius. His antics (besides the video above) have been stunts like shooting a 50 cal machine gun into a Prius. Despite his poor motives - he does show that you can kill any car's mileage either due to environment, or driving patterns, or a deliberate stunt.

    Long gentle city driving with minimal friction braking and mostly regenerative braking will also result in excellent fuel economy for Prius, as the aerodynamic drag is minimal.

    His test should be invalidated from the start because he was slipstreaming the Prius nearly the entire time..... :D

    And his comment about it not being what you drive, but how you drive is intellectually dishonest.

    He can drive the Beemer as gently as possible and he'll never come close to what the Prius can accomplish with respect to fuel efficiency driven the same way.

    But it's "extremely helpful" to know that when you run a legacy Prius engine to the point of explosion, against a V8 that's essentially idling, it's a few percentage points less efficient... :rolleyes:

    Hey! You just rediscovered the entire point of owning a Prius! City driving. How about that.

    And it's zero frictional braking, and minimal regenerative braking. Braking period should be avoided as much as possible.

    Observe, anticipate, and glide/coast = winning at the pump. And the Prius takes advantage of this driving style better than any other mass-produced HEV vehicle on earth.

    I get 75 mpg on my Gen 4 Prius Prime on the freeway in the HEV mode, but I mostly drive 57-mph. :)

    Nope, real mpg. Gen 4 Prius Prime is a very fuel-efficient car. Arguably, the larger traction battery helps better optimize the HEV driving as well.

    The poor folks that find it inexplicable how some folks might get only get 35 MPG over an entire tank of gas .... are probably the same poor folks finding it inexplicable how others can get 75 MPG over an entire tank of gas.

    Somehow it escapes folks that when you average those highs & lows together you get an average that's pretty close to the EPA's estimate. Thus - YMMV

    My all-time real HEV mpg (after discounting BEV driving and MFD overestimation) is around 70 mpg, well above the EPA's 54 mpg. This was verified by manual calculations.

    It depends on how you drive the car. If you are a hypermiler and drive a little slower, Prius is capable of 70–80 mpg.

    Moreover, my average MFD mpge is around 6.3 mi/kWh (× 33.705 kWh/ge = 212 mpge)—perhaps comes down to around 5.7 mi/kWh (192 mpge) at the plug—well above EPA's 3.95 mi/kWh (133 mpge) at the plug.

    Thank you for never missing a chance to say how great your car is - mileage wise - especially when compared to the 2023 - 2024. It certainly never gets old.
    Even in threads about very poor mileage - it gets slipped in as a major thrust. Yes! your car is certainty better than the best! Maybe - if we all had a dollar for every time we continually get reminded of this "better" factor of your older car - we could drive our inferior plugin hybrids for thousands of miles - to take up the difference of your cars greatnes!

    I just crossed paths with someone who has one of those huge 2023 RAV 4 Primes. Since she received the notice to not plug it in when it’s cold out due to possible fire risk she has been driving it as a hybrid and gets 40mpg. If she can do this in that big box, a 2023/24 Prius should be able to regularly get close to 50mpg I would hope.

    Your math is wrong. Or you're driving downhill, have a tailwind, slipstreaming a semi, or all three. :LOL:

    The Prius has far fewer advantages on the highway. Your ICE will run almost all the time. Were you pulse and gliding?

    How long was your highway test? And how did you validate it? Please tell me you didn't use the grossly inaccurate G4 MPG gauges.

    I really believe that just about anybody can achieve the stated fuel economy on the window sticker if they employ "normal" hybrid driving techniques, like going easy on the brakes. If they have a VERY unusual, SHORT, daily driving circuit; or 95% highway at 75MPH+, they should be fine. Even mountainous topography should balance itself out except in the most extreme cases right?

    The longer and slower (within reason) your drive, the better your fuel economy all things being equal. I would say the flatter the better too, but I don't know why the lost fuel economy isn't gained back on the backside of the hills. I know there's a poster on here that says the hills are killing his MPG's.

    I agree with this. I clocked 70 MPG's at the pump on mine, and I think I was being kind of sloppy. Certainly no hardcore hypermiling exercise.

    I couldn't get 80 without longer, less frequent trips. In fact, the G5 LE is so efficient, I think I might be able to get 90 MPG's on a tank if I burned it all out in a couple days of city driving only. Whew, that would be boring. 800-900 miles of stop-n-go city traffic over two days. :censored:

    That would sure make a taxi driver happy. But the extra weight from passengers would certainly have an effect.

    Wow, this mpg thread is almost as fun as an oil thread ;)

    That being said, all the thumping about how good one's mpg is, is just smokescreen unless you can back it up with data on an ongoing basis. The only mpg that matters is tracking how many miles you drive on a tank of gas. FIll it up, do the math, log it and repeat. That's why I use an app. I originally started using it to track the general overall health of my vehicles since deteriorating mpg can be a sign of mechanical issues. It also paints a picture of how well the vehicle operates under different conditions like when the seasons change, using different tire pressures or different set of tires or different grades of gas etc.

    And for anyone who says they can only get 35 mpg in a Prius yet drives like a Grandma, they haven't seen the way my 89 year old mother drives.
