How are these people on Fuelly getting such bad MPG's???

    I don't even think you could get that bad of fuel economy on a test track going WOT all the time. Maybe at a drag strip?

    Some owners seeing “better” mpg are just relying on what Toyota says on the dash, which is about as optimistic as they can get away with.

    that said, with the 2023 Prius, the dash display of mpg is finally accurate?

    Where is it winter over the last couple months of fill-ups? Siberia?

    39 MPG's in the G5 is gonna require 2 mile trips only with both pedals mashed to the floor at the same time during lol.

    You're cheating. You have a plug! :p

    Much better.

    Tank average is normally within a few % pts.

    It's the way they are driving their cars, pure and simple. Years ago, I had a 2005 Honda Civic hybrid and was able to achieve 44-46 mpg consistently which I used for my work. Another employee had a 2006 Civic Hybrid and complained they could only get 35 mpg. So one day, I asked to accompany them on their service calls and drove their car. By the end of the day, their mpg readout showed over 48 mpg.

    CR didn't exactly get high numbers with past Prius models in tests. Some people do actually drive like that in real life.

    Some of the poor slobs up in Alaska during winters on short drives only get milage in the 30s mpg. So quit your crying & complaining. Noth8ng new here.

    I don't know. While Kansas is not Alaska, it gets pretty damn cold down here. I would have to work really hard to average 30's over an entire tank. I never averaged less than 50's on the 2019. And some days it was so cold, the battery barely cranked. Eventually, the Prius warms up and you're back in business. Yes, the ICE fires more often to keep the heater warm.

    Nobody said these folks live in Alaska BTW. Just checked Anchorage's weather forecast and its high 30's-40's.

    when people learn more about their prius - one of those many first things they learn is there is no cranking of a battery to start up the Prius. all that happens when the start button is pushed - is the systen boots up into ready mode. The traction pack then seamlessly turns over the ice as is necessary

    This was an interesting article on a group that tried to get the worst fuel economy they could with the new Prius.

    Spoiler alert! They didn't get 30's.

    One advantage they had is that they drove it non-stop I think. Once the G5 warms up, it is incredibly efficient and quick to shut off. Tiny trips are the vehicle's nemesis. But who has ONLY tiny trips? Eventually the battery will be highly charged from all the "warm-up" events - offering nice EV range and evening things out.

    That is because they do not drive 40-mph on country roads in long trips like you do. mpg will be inversely proportional to the square of the speed.

    Yep, the WLTP "Extra High" for the Prime (which is just slightly worse) is stated as 5,6l (42mpg) and includes average speed of roughly 100kmh (60mph) with a maximum of 130kmh (80mph). That does not seem alot for long distance "high speed" travel.... soon we will have some realistic Autobahn mpgs.

    A Prius always shows its best fuel economy when you need neither heat nor air conditioning on longer trips with little elevation change. Heck, most cars will do their best in those circumstances.

    Autumn in Kansas fits the bill for optimum conditions.

    Visit the Fuelly forums, and you'll find posts about errors.

    Short trips in which the engine is barely warmed up really do drop efficiency. So will the 19 inch wheels, as well as low tire pressures, lots of idling, etc.

    Then some people are just inefficient drivers. The economy of their other cars aren't impressive either. Including 38.6mpg for a 2005 Prius. I had to do 85+mph to get figures like that from mine.
