North America Charging Standard

There’s a thread on this site saying that Prius is selling at a much slower pace on the East Coast.

It reminded me that I researched the Prime and realized the number of locations and the number of slots available to charge along my 16-mile home-to-work route in New Jersey are few and far between.

Tesla chargers, on the other hand, are abundant at multiple locations including my local supermarket, an outdoor plaza that includes Target and Barnes and Noble, and adjacent to another supermarket/Starbucks.

Furthermore, tens of millions of people on the East Coast live like sardines in apartment buildings and condominiums. There’s no access to home charging.

I don’t believe that any hybrid or electric vehicle can sell in significant numbers if customers cannot access chargers in a convenient manner near home, work or in-between. (Hotel parking lots don’t count. Many near Newark Airport have security guards checking if you’re a guest.)

With Tesla, you can get 150 miles in 20-30 minutes. I see people are willing to sit in their Teslas for an extended period to charge.

The big decision for Toyota is whether to adopt NACS. I am not sure what the design cost adjustments would be.

Today Toyota announced they reached a deal with Tesla to adopt NACS starting in 2025. They didn't offer many specifics, but I imagine the Prius Prime mid-cycle refresh will incorporate the technology, natively.

This a great step for Toyota and their customers.
