The latest version of Dr Prius has changed the SOC calculation, and now matches CarScanner Pro SOC.

Prior it was CarSOC+16.5%. I only have one data point so far:

CarSOC of 100% = 90.94% in Dr Prius.

If you have any more Dr Prius vs Car SOC data, please post in this thread.

    CarSOC = Dr Prius

    100% = 90.94%
    91% = 82.71%
    61% = 61.15%

This relationship is not linear at all. So, I don't know if I trust the Dr. Prius SOC. What is it at 0%?

To me the Car SOC is the useful value and has a reasonably linear relation with the EV range at the indicated rate.

I have found three other apps which purport to read the car's remaining charge - Dr Prius, Car Scanner Pro, and the Toyota App.

The Toyota App presents a value with non-linear relation to the car's indicated SOC, and I have found no use for the value.
Dr. Prius and CarScannerPro are now reporting matching values with a different non-linear relation to the car's indicated SOC, and I have found no use for the values - but these apps do have trusted reputations. I hope to gain some insight through these values.

0% is yet to be reported.

    2023 Prius Prime SOC Comparison.png

Some folks on Reddit asked for some explaining:

The 2023 Prius Prime has a new information layout and a new 13.6kW "traction battery". The car offers various ways to monitor the battery charge.

    Reference:

    https://attachments.priuschat.com/attachment-files/2023/09/243725_IMG_5192.jpeg

    https://www.prius5.com/attachments/img_4540-jpg.263/

First guage is an arc on the left of the speed display showing roughly the top 70% in green and the bottom 30% in blue. The green area is the battery capacity reserved for EV only mode driving. The bottom blue area is the battery capacity reserved for "EV driving in HV mode". In other words, used only for short periods to get the car moving, and then used to start the internal combustion engine (ICE). As it turns out this blue area capacity is also used surprisingly a lot (70-80% of time) when barely pressing the accelerator to maintain a constant speed. This "Hybrid Mode" switching between ICE and EV motor is the key to getting 45+ MPG when using gas to drive.

There is another battery gauge below the speed, which can be set to display an estimate of remaining EV mode range in miles, or a "xx% EV mode capacity remaining". I prefer the "% EV mode charge remaining" setting.

The Toyota phone app shows 30% charge remaining when no EV mode capacity is available (blue area only and -----% next to the little battery symbol), and the phone app value shows 100% when the car has been "fully charged", with the green arc full and 100% displayed next to the little battery symbol.

That EV Mode capacity remaining (green area and xx%) are the Car SOC (EV Mode % remaining) on the x-axis of the graph. This is solid truth. When the car guage shows 0% "----%" the car will not remain in EV mode, and the ICE will start and stop to maximize MPG. Until then, when there is green area EV Mode capacity "1%" to "100%" is displayed by the car, the car prefers to drive in EV only mode and never starts the ICE.

There are two other applications that can report a value for the hybrid/traction battery state of charge - Dr Prius and Car Scanner Pro. Both of these apps are reporting a "charge remaining/state of charge" value per a Toyota mechanic tool called Toyota Techstream. These values are the Toyota "under the covers/internal" charge values based on the battery's actual capacity. To extend the life of the battery, Toyota does not fully charge the battery and does not fully empty the battery.

According to Dr Prius and CarScannerPro the battery is only charged to 91% of its actual capacity, and is only allowed to discharge to 14% of its actual capacity.

These numbers are different than the most often suggestion for Lithium chemistry batteries of 30% to 80% charge to give the longest battery life. I don't know if to trust the Dr Prius/CarScannerPro values, but the 14% to 91% range maps well to the 10.6kWh EV Mode battery capacity that I have determined from driving the car. 10.6kWh out of 13.6kWh is 78% of the total capacity which matches the change in Dr Prius state of charge values.

Also interesting is that Recurrent is showing that I am averaging 80% charge, so perhaps Toyota thinks the car will not be sitting fully charged nor with no EV mode capacity such that the average battery usage is within those 30 to 80% suggestions.

Some more folks asked for a "simpler" explanation:
    • Approx 9% to 12% at bottom of battery capacity reserved (weak estimate)
    • Approx 2% to 5% of battery reserved for HV mode (only ever seen 2 pixels dark in bottom arc)
    • 78% (14% to 92%) of battery reserved for EV mode = 10.6 kWh
    • 8% to 9% at top of battery capacity reserved

    • Toyota app charge remaining value is not directly useful

Add voltage at SOC for a more comprehensive / relative analysis.
Historically, PIP and Prime were around 15% to 85% of the total packs capacity using non OEM tools.

I avoided voltages expecting wildly non-linear at the top and bottom. The EV Mode range appears to still be somewhat non-linear.

And pack voltage is 265 V fully charged? What is the voltage when the engine switches on?

measuring voltage is easier the slower you can drive / no traffic ot other distractions.

No, lithium-ion cells are always specced to be 3.7 V, just like carbon–zinc and alkaline cells are always specced to be 1.5 V. The actual voltage will differ depending on SOC. 72 cells × 3.7 V = 266.4 V. Each cell is 51.0 Ah, which is 51.0 Ah × 3.7 V = 189 Wh; therefore, the total capacity of 72 cells is 13.6 kWh.

(Only 36.7mi range this time. 42.6mi range and 43.7mi range on prior full discharges.)

So 2023 Prius Prime XSE looks to be 14% to 91% (have seen as high as 92% on some full charges).

    (92-14% = 78% used for EV mode,
    0.78 * 13.59 = 10.6 kWh for EV mode
which closely matches my average (miles / rate / %used) for 58 EV mode days.)

I think shots of DrPrius for the Prime look better in landscape. But that's just me, ya know ?
I finished a drive at 38% SOC and 347.75 volts and Dr Prius said blade voltage was 3.62
3.62 x 95 = 343.9 - I'm not that picky since Dr Prius is supporting so many Toyota hybrid models now.
When / If I get techstream connected, that'll be another story.

I hesitate to post DrPrius screenshots for our Gen 4, I just don't want to confuse things any more than I'm confused already. I hope Profes John does a 2023 Prime traction battery deep dive one of these days. ;)

The traction battery is 13.59 kWh or 13.6 rounded.
This is how it works up to that:

I don't know if you guys care about how the traction pack cells are configured, size weight, number of banks / blocks / stacks (whatever you want to call them), If there are only 72 cells in series or if it's a 72s 2p pack or if the individual cells are bigger and or heavier than the Gen 4 Prime cells, cause the weight of the 2023 Prime pack is about 5 lbs heavier than than the straight 95s pack of the Gen 4 Prime.

I do like the "cell diff" spec showing in your DrPrius shots. Mine has been holding steady at 0.01 ever since Dr Prius started supporting Gen 4 Prime, and cell stack #2 shows on the DrPrius graph as noticeably lower voltage even at 0.01 volts cell voltage difference, both fully charged all the way down to fully discharged.
Internal Resistance is tricky and can be hard to track, but it can show when the pack gets stressed and when it recovers form that stress (if it ever does).

Gen 4 has 95 25.0-Ah prismatic cells, yes, which makes it 8.79 kWh. So, Gen 5's 51.0-Ah prismatic cells are bigger. They probably have a higher energy density because it has been six years.

I don't know what you mean by straight pack. Gen 4 has five 19-cell stacks. Gen 5 perhaps has six 12-cell stacks of its 72 cells, but I am only speculating. At the end, they are all connected in series; so, one bad cell will ruin it all.

This was the part of the Gen 5 spec sheet I wanted to post back in #12 that lists the traction pack voltage at 351.5 volts nominal, just like the Gen 4 traction pack. Who knows maybe the spec sheet is wrong?

Yes, that 351.5V is wrong. I guess they missed that number when revising the G4 table cos it's not actually in the table proper, but in a heading. That's the G4 number (95*3.7). G5 nominal voltage is 266.4V (72*3.7). It's 3*24 in series.

They also didn't update the motor voltage - it's been raised to 650V in the G5 Prime (not non-Prime).
