Correct me if I am wrong, but according to the VIN serial numbers, there seem to be only about 15,000 Gen 5 Priuses and 10,000 Gen 5 Prius Primes made so far. This is a really low production rate, perhaps about 20% of the Gen 4 production rate.

Tech sector has not recovered from COVID. There is no stock in the car lots in the Midwest at all. I'd imagine it is why Limited models don't show up in Primes. Microprocessors still not widely available so they're allocating for higher margin cars. This is all speculation but probably not far off.

Wasn't Toyota's announced production plan around 30k of the hybrid the first year?

Japan might be getting 500 of the plug in a month.

AWD serial numbers seem to be separate. So, that adds up to about 22,000 for the Prius so far. So, it should be about 30,000 by the end of the year, which is pretty low. Prius Prime is currently around 10,000.

In contrast, they are making about 350,000 Camrys a year—almost ten times more.

Here are the annual Prius sales:
    • In 2010, Toyota sold a record 509,400 regular Priuses worldwide.
    • With the low gas prices, this number went down to 32,000 in 2020—before the supply-chain problems.
    • Supply-chain problems are over now and the gas prices are very high, but Toyota does not want to make more Priuses anymore.

You can't just claim sales numbers stay depressed after supply shortages because Toyota it doesn't "feel" like making more ... the numbers went down because there are so many other choices nowadays.
Please provide a link if you feel Toyota has suddenly secured massive amounts of traction pack sources. Otherwise it's best to realize without traction packs you can't build more plugins much less electric cars ... much less regular ol' hybrids.
'Wanting' to build more prius has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with more choices coupled with insufficient traction pack supply chains. As you rightly point out prius hybrid sales have been going down for many years. More choices .

Curious... what was the Prius's competition back in 2010?

    What's its competition now?

I looked at the Prius because I wanted a Prime... and didn't think another Rav4Prime would make sense- even if I could get one.

And I see Hill raised the same point:
"You can't just claim sales numbers stay depressed after supply shortages because Toyota it doesn't "feel" like making more ... the numbers went down because there are so many other choices nowadays."

Nah, that's not it at all. Toyota has been selling more hybrid versions of most of their other models than Prius HEVs. This is especially sad given that Prius is its own model line. In fact, they have sold five times as many RAV4 HEVs as Prius HEVs and three times as many RAV4 PHEVs as Prius PHEVs so far in 2023. Total Prius HEV and PHEV sales are only 7% of total Toyota EV sales. I am sure they can supply tiny 0.9-kWh battery packs for Prius HEV. They simply don't want to make Priuses anymore because they don't think it is a popular car.

Your conclusion contradicts your supporting statements.

They've successfully responded to more demand for RAV4s than Priuseses.

1st - you say they don't want to make more Prius - so they can artificially inflate prices .... then you say it's due to Toyota thinking the car isn't popular .... Nice .... get to have it both ways.

My guess specifically for the US is that there is still this major SUV mentality. Everyone wants an SUV and getting a hybrid makes people feel good. Even I wouldn’t mind a small one of it had the gas mileage of the a Prius. Plus with the Corolla and Camry hybrids what’s the point in getting a Prius unless you need hatchback, a more sporty looking car or the perks of the Prime plugin. I’m in line for a Prius and I’m surprised it’s still being made. I can’t justify the Prime because of cost and not having a place to plug it in. I guess I’m also not alone in this dilemma.

It is more of a fact than conclusion. See the sales figures. Toyota does not think that there is demand for Prius because they now offer so many hybrids, most of being more popular than Prius, and most people by far still want SUVs and pickup trucks despite how high gas prices are. Supply chains are a secondary concern if at all. That is the final conclusion/fact check.

Regarding my point that OEMs are deliberately reducing vehicle supply to drive the prices up, that is also a fact, and it is all across the OEMs and model lines. I posted an article here, in which the executives of various OEMs publicly disclosed that they now made more profits with reduced vehicle supply and they would like to keep the supply low in the future [if they can] and never go back to the old days when dealers were flooded with new vehicles, which sold at deep discounts.

Follow your own point then. After you were thinking Toyota was deliberately limiting manufacturing to force higher Prius prices - you finally admit the Prius sales diminish because of so many choices. You state people want bigger rides .... well guess where that leads ....
