16" rims may catch on like fire, and not just for snows. (y)

Blackat- no issues with the extra width? Just want to be sure.... And adequate clearance around the brakes with 16" diameter? I guess so, or you wouldn't have done it....

Thanks for confirming! Reassures me about my winter wheels!

None at all. I had a long conversation with TireRack before I bought. They did put the balance weights too far outside on the inner wheel and they rubbed on the caliper oh so little and I had the tire shop relocate

That's pretty tight; the weights are about 4mm with adhesive.

I was trying to understand why you were putting on winter tires NOW... and looked at your location: Colorado?! It's that time already?

Yep. It was an annoying rotation noise as it passed by the calipers.
I thought it might go away after a few miles but it didn’t so had them moved to the inner inside of the wheel

Yeah, I live in Winter Park. I would have waited but one of the tires had a side wall blow out and I have the Wheel/tire warranty. Plus I had the new wheels and tires so I installed them.
Snow in the mtns coming this week.
Also, still waiting on the dealer to get me a replacement tire, been a week.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. I'm leaning towards 16" and 205s also.

That 4 mm clearance is tight. Could depend on the rim; others might be better.

Gonna be interesting to see if heat or even ice and snow accumulation will cause problems down the road. 4mm sounds pretty tight indeed.

Yeah I'm thinking if hidden weights are just grazing the calipers, 17" rims are the sensible minimum. Again, it could depend on the rim, but seems dicey.

Hey there, I'm happy you're taking the risk for us! ;p

But really, these are just random questions in my mind. You can get ice accumulations on any wheels. As for heat, I am not entirely sure how the regen braking works. My understanding is that it doesn't always engage the pads so might have less heat generated there but I am not sure if it generate any of its heat during regen and if it's centered around the wheel. Could be a non issue.

Keep notes, color and life of the discs please!

I've got 15" Plug-In Prius rims on our '10 right now. Doing finger-feeler-gauge on them, with the front my pinkie is a go, ring finger a no-go. With the rears, somewhat surprisingly, even pinkie is no-go. Just.

Checking my pinkie with a caliper, I'd make the rear (lesser) clearance around 8 mm, fronts maybe 9.

someone here was upset by my whittling popsicle sticks down to certain mm widths (to rough check brake pad thickness); hopefully he doesn’t catch wind of this…

    That's not really a concern.

These I believe are the exact wheels I ordered from Costco. I will be having Bridgestone 205 65r16 winters mounted this Friday. Wheels clear the front calipers by about 1/2 inch. These wheels also work with the OEM nuts which are not cone type.

Michelin.ca has a sale starting tomorrow: Oct 5- Dec 20 2023 $70 off a set of 4, and an additional $30 off a set of winter tires.

    Gen 5 winter rims?
I have been trying to follow the link (above in this post) for 16 inch rims from Costco but have found that the link for the rims mentioned was for Costco Canada. Has anyone been successful in ordering that part number for C wheels ( is part number 1253385) for the C- wheels 16 inch TY1 Replica wheel CW08119 inside the US? . Sorry as I am a newbie the site will not allow me to post the link mentioned in this string of posts.

It is getting time to add snows here soon. Thanks

UPDATE Just heard from C-wheels customer support that they only sell wheels in Canada and will not ship to the US. So my search for 16 inch rims available in the US that will not interfere with the brakes continues.

I think you only need to look for rims size 16x6.5 with 40mm offset and CB 60.1 with 205/65/16 tires should work.

Not a fan of aftermarket wheels. For a winter set of wheels, we found a set of 16" Camry wheels off a 2012 Camry from a junkyard that seem fit well and clear brakes, suspension etc. Using tire size 205/65/16 diameter and circumference is really close to the factory 19's with 195/50/19...and Camry wheels have same lugnuts, socket etc to get them off. The taller 65 aspect ratio ties on 16" wheels are cheaper than 19" tires and less susceptible to blowouts when hitting potholes etc. Great for winter tires IMHO if you live in a snowy part of the country. We also installed Clone TPMS sensors with Autel so when you seasonally switch wheels no programming needed to pair the sensors to car.
