Speedometer wasn't working. Now it works but Media/Back-up screen doesn't.

And the weirdest thing is the only thing I did was change the 12V battery.

I remember seeing the speedometer not working the last time I ran the car, about a month ago. I remember researching that it may be some sort of capacitor that would need to be replaced.

Now, after changing out the 12V for a new one (car started right up with no need to be jumped) the speedo works, but now the screen that does the climate controls and back up camera and other things I'm not sure of, it no longer works.

Any ideas what in the world is going on and how to fix it?

By disconnecting the 12v battery, you momentarily reset the electronics of the car, thus making your speedometer work again. But it will fail real soon as you didn't fix anything except reset the car when you replaced the battery.

As for screen that controls climate and backup camera, that also might be broken, as it's a common failure for these cars as they age

Oh boy! More to fix. Right after the wheel bearing, the windshield, the missing wheel wells, the HV battery, the catalytic converter, and the damaged engine block.

Please cheer me on! I think it's going to snow tonight, but I feel like working on this car this week.

Older cars are just like that, their parts fail and will need replacement. Eventually you'll have replaced everything and then you'll end up with a "new" old car

True. But for some reason this Prius has been the hardest car for me to fix. Either it's harder, or its parts are more expensive, or I just don't have the umph I used to have. I rebuilt my 1972 VW Beetle engine and got it running better than ever. I had to change a few parts on the 1985 VW Golf diesel, and it ran until nearly 700,000 miles. The 1993 Mazda 323 needed the head shaved once and a new radiator. All of them needed brakes and shocks and CV joints from time to time. They all were running, driveable cars when I sold them.

But I can't seem to be able to get the Prius to be road worthy, and sometimes feel like it's an uphill battle. Hopefully I'll get it all figured out and have, like you say, a new old car. I think just finding parts is one of the hardest things. Which reminds me, someone on here offered to help me get parts. I'll have to look for that post.

Well other than the HV battery, the parts you have replaced are quite common for an older car (except damaged engine block). This car is not very tricky to fix, it's actually quite reliable once the failed parts are replaced.

Where do you suggest I get parts, like the rear hatch handle/plate light trim that exploded on me this last winter when I tried to open the hatch?

In the Los Angeles area where I'm from, I have no issues finding parts at junk yards. The body parts on the car are actually deemed worthless and many places won't even stock them. Your best bet will be Ebay, autobeyours.com, or local wrecking yards if they still stock older Prius parts.

You can buy most all of that stuff online the aftermarket has you covered The rear plate that the rear hatch button goes on and the camera is covered by it and all that You can even get that in colors for like 30 bucks or something not very expensive at all You can get the hatch button cover it's like $9 and it's rubber not vinyl I'm trying to think of what else but a lot of that stuff is covered and inexpensive I just bought dash advance people trying to pimp them online for $159 for a set of four remember there's still old and brittle no matter what car they came off of it this point New I paid $88 for the whole set of four and they seem to be made out of a more pliable plastic more friendly to our kind of use.

Yes just like that. You can find all kinds of these parts similar to this and other plastic that used to cost big money like look at that green colored piece of plastic that goes on the green car that's like $300 or something at one point now it's 32.99 so on and so forth then usually if you're replacing that you also need the rubber button cover that screws on over the button that releases the trunk you're trying to lift and then after that all you need to do is use some silicone grease on the face of your rubber seal on the deck lid then it won't freeze stick and cause you to excessively pull on this piece

I'm trying to find info on how to fix the screen. It is just black. I haven't found anything that describes how to fix a black screen. Any suggestions on where to start?

I would check these 3 fuses. If those are good, then it's time to remove the MFD assembly enough to check that those power circuits actually supply 12V at the MFD (and check the ground circuits as well). The service manual has complete wiring diagrams and further diagnostic tests under the audio-visual section.

Scanning all systems with a capable scantool might produce relevant codes in the gateway ecu - or not. Short form, if the unit has the proper powers and grounds but doesn't turn on, then there's likely an internal fault. Easiest repair is to find a used MFD with the exact same part number on it.

    Sounds good to me!

I do have a Haynes manual. Has anyone tried the Bentley brand repair manual for the 2nd gen Prius. I loved Bentley manuals for my other cars! Otherwise I'll take a shot at TIS again. 'Tis a pain, but better than nothing.

The question is what to scan it with... I could try Techstream again. I never could get it to work though.

I followed this guide when I replaced my entire MFD LCD screen and digitizer.
The part was $300. but the results were well worth it. If you send it out to be repaired to UPfix. it is $450.00
The combination meter I sent to TexasHybridBatteries for repair. well worth it. There is a u pull and pay in COS that gets Prius in from time to time. That is a bit of a drive but not to bad.
