VVT Solenoid- Red Bullet or Bull@*$% ?

Was it finally determined that @mr_guy_mann tested a bad or fake Red Bullet, or was it an accurate result?

 

Where would you guys think Toyota didn't try to achieve the best efficiency and these guys suddenly did?

 

Because when you're building millions of cars the difference between a $1 part and a higher quality $5 part can add up over the course of multiple parts to take tens of millions of dollars out of your profit margin.

Anything that is mass produced at this scale is designed to increase profit margins by reducing quality/price of parts as much as possible.

This also why all us DYI engineers are constantly finding ways to improve the performance/quality of our vehicle by upgrading all the trashy garbage we see every time we take apart our car.

I've driven a used Gen2 Prius for 188K miles on top of its original 104K and the past 3 years has been much better on VVT lag time when I need to accelerate to avoid other drivers in traffic thanks to this RedBullet upgrade. I'm 100% certain this was a legitimate upgrade, but am mad they raised the price so high.

Because of the holy grail of the day and that's gas mileage. A Red Bullet will not improve gas mileage in fact it will make it worse. But you will get a little more torque in the sweet spot. Torque is not free. Somebody's got to pay.

 

It has nothing to do with the cost of the parts of a device like the red bullet at the manufacturing level. It has to do with the holy grail of the day and that's bragging rights of excellent gas mileage.
A Red Bullet does not increase gas mileage I know I owned one. What it does is slightly increase engine torque at the sweet spot enough that the pants dyno can feel it. Its a no brainier it advances engine timing much faster than stock timing. Period. That consumes more gas. The engine is working harder. In a G2 that timing advance happens right where you need it to pass another car. Increased torque is not free it costs gasoline. It hurts your gas mileage but makes the car much more fun to drive. If you limp around town like you normally do with a G2 you wont notice any difference. Its a 76 horsepower engine it needs all the help it can get.

 

Well... This is the first time I've ever thought about this product in terms of MPG. Makes me want to start making plans to compare that when I sell off my project Prius and pull the Red Bullet from my daily driver to include it in the sale.

Until this post I always thought the main value of a Red Bullet was simply to eliminate that scary lull when you pull out into traffic on a city street and floor it and power kicks in faster with Red Bullet compared to OEM.

But us Prius nerds are mpg obsessed so now I'm excited to see how the trade off for an mpg boost is compared to people thinking I cut them off and getting angry with me when I pull out into traffic because Toyota sucks at basic ECU computer code. I know multiple Prius owners who sold their Gen2 after experiencing this lull when they floor it in a dangerous situation.

 

How much faster? From how many degrees to how many degrees, in what time span?

 

Well cant say I never said it before but this thing works and makes the prius quicker.

Just get one and find out and use promo code "azusa" and come back and let all the nay sayers know how your prius is faster.

Lol why hasn't someone just done a before and after with a dragy... Very cheap and easy to do...
I might order one and test it that way since I have both a Gen 3 and 4 plus a dragy.

So, do you have access to a Gen 2 to do this experiment? If not, then the results might have limited, if any, relevance to a Gen 2.

 

No, just gen 3 and 4 plus a Dragy. If someone with one of these solenoids would like to borrow my Dragy they can. I'm located in the SF Bay Area.
