Hi. Replaced Toyota battery in 2016, 2019, 2021 (under warranty) and now in 2023 battery died after the car wasn't started for 10 days. I've charged it and it's reading 12.1 on the MFD after a couple of 3 mile drives. I'm fed up of these short lasting dealership batteries. Any alternative suggestions that are available in the UK. Cheap EFB is available but I'm worried about safety so prefer AGM. There's a Yuasa HJ-S46B24R, a Hankook AXS46B24R and two Optimas, the Optima YTS2.7 (8071-176) and a Prius specific model DS46B24R I want it to be drop in with no modifications so need confidence these and others will fit properly. Can anyone help please?
It is not the battery's fault. It sounds like you're not driving the car enough. Any of those options should match the OEM. Honestly though. don't expect them to last any longer than OEM.
Correct on both counts. One failed because during and between covid lockdowns I was only doing very short trips and even since covid my mileage is about 3000 miles a year of mostly between 1 mile and 4 miles trips. The dealership and Yuasa batteries (same battery I think) are about £170 whereas the Optima and Hancook can be bought for £100 to £130. So I'd go for the cheapest. I can't understand why the optima battery labelled specifically Prius is more expensive. They look the same in the specs. Also, is it worth doing a pulse repair on my existing battery. I already charged it. Thank you
optima has gone way up in price, for whatever reason. whatever battery you buy, consider an inexpensive battery tender, if you have a place to plug in.
yeah, that's an issue. another possibility is a switch on the 12v, and put up with the resetting of radio stations and whatever else.
No, because it won't work. Pulse methods can (but often don't) fix a regular wet cell lead acid battery, but those methods are, from everything I've read, entirely ineffective on AGM batteries like the one in the Prius. Are there Walmarts in the UK? In the US they sell a compatible battery.
It sounds like a solar trickle charger is your only solution if you can't plug in a regular charger. Those short drives are like putting bullet through the battery. Guaranteed dead, just a little slower.
