I wish. Last time I was deployed, we just got coffee..... In addition to being a tool and an overt eugenicist and racist (like his boss) Josephus Daniels a Navy Secretary banned alky-haul on ships. Except for medicinal applications such as aviator and depth-charge rations. The Man Named Josephus: Why We Call Coffee “A Cup of Joe” | The Kitchn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splice_the_mainbrace “Splice the mainbrace” came to mean that the crew would receive an extra ration of rum, and was issued on special occasions: after victory in battle, the change of a monarch, a royal birth, a royal wedding or an inspection of the fleet. In the USN, that "extra ration" was ONE ration of brandy.
Well, I think the chicken leg water trap "done good." Today, instead of being set upon by literally....and I do mean literally ... dozens of the critters when we step out, may get one or three. Hopefully, next year I will catch the queen in April and I can skip all this.
Well, getting time to sunset the trap. Last week it seemed to catch maybe eight an hour. The last few days, maybe two an hour. And when I looked late this afternoon, did not appear that it caught more than one or two all day. And, as I was sitting out sipping some Chardonnay, I was only set upon only semi-seriously by one YJ. The weather is cooling and their salad days have seemed to come to end this year, which again seems to be one of the worst years for them in recent memory -- should I blame it on climate change. But, to reference a post I made several years back about the stings possibly helping joint pain, a bear helped me out and destroyed that nest. That's a weird story. The article I read said "yellow jackets and bees". I am not sure where the information was coming from. It would kind of surprise me to have a bunch of yellow jackets being all friendly-like with a bunch of bees, all in the same bag of potting soil.
insects are complicated. all my life, we called the tiny ants that make anthills and bite you 'red ants'. now i'm being told they are not red
Invasive species don't go everywhere: Sustainability | Free Full-Text | Mapping the Potential Global Distribution of Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) Based on a Machine Learning Method Northeast US has a different invasive red ant species Myrmica rubra (linked article above). It did not go everywhere either. This Myrmica and fire ant Solenopsis might not move into same areas. But if they did there would be a fight. Fire ant Solenopsis invicta is great at eating other ants. I usta have several ant species indoors in Puerto Rico, until S. invicta came, then no more kitchen ants. == take a tour at https://www.antweb.org/
Summary. from Google sources: Some good news, the "murder hornets" have not been found in Washington State this year. It takes several years before eradication is declared a success. Then I learned there is a new threat, 'yellow legged hornets,' found in Georgia, another bee killer. Bob Wilson
I caught so many of them this year. 2 jars! Including some of them are hiving in my 1986 Toyota pickup that I only use for home improvement. As I took off, the yellow jacket followed the truck halfway to the carwash. O blasted the rest of them to eternity.
They're like dried shells as I toss them out of a jar putting them on a plastic bag to trash them. When they group on a peril, they fight to the death. I notice lots of them were decapitated. I have to air blower the whole outside house perimeter so my cat wont step or play with them.
