Stripped bolt while removing EGR

    I'm trying to do an EGR cleaning on a 2015 Prius Four. I was trying to undo the bottom nut which can be seen in the screenshot, and my wrench got lost in the engine bay. I tried using a slightly too large socket (I know, stupid) and somewhat rounded it off.

    I went and bought a new ratcheting box wrench, but it won't fit on the bent up nut. I've tried pliers but it's a really hard angle. I sprayed some PB blaster about half an hour ago to maybe make it easier with pliers. But if that doesn't work, what do I do? There's barely any room for nut extractor tools.

    Nevermind, I got it! I remembered we have long bolt extractors, and I stuck it on a socket wrench, and it came out. I used the 1/2 inch size Irwin Hanson Deep Well Bolt Grip, shown in the photo, if anyone else has this issue.

    Does anyone know the size of nut I need to replace it? I've seen some posts about people not even putting a certain nut back on after. Is it this one?

    Yes, but he just says 12mm. But that's the width of the outside of the nut, not the inner threaded part.

    I'm thinking to use the nut from the side on the low stud, and not putting a nut there, since I think that's what people said wasn't a big deal to use.

    Some of use never reinstall that PITA nut after removing it for the first, and last time.

    I've also removed the stud that the nut attached to as well. It makes reinstalling the cooler much easier, both to position the cooler, and you don't have to fuss with that out of the way nut.

    ^ This. Remove the nut, and the stud (with E8 Torx socket, very cautiously*), put them labelled in box somewhere, for about a decade, then throw out. (That's my workflow, makes EGR cooler removal MUCH easier next time, and assuages your conscience.)

    * It took me about 1/2 hour, very patiently backing out that stud, with a 1/4" drive ratchet and torx socket, so crowded and deep in there it was one click at a time. Dissimilar metals made it a bear..

    Speaking of bears, across the street from me, about 10 minutes ago. I was in a rush, so instead of turning around just scooted by (on foot).

    Typical lawn, btw, hasn't been significant rain here in months.

    Ok thanks all. I already put it back together without the nut, but the stud is still there. It wasn't too challenging with the stud, but next time I might remove it.

    In other news, does anyone know where these go? :LOL: It's the only extras I ended up with. I remember one of the videos I watched saying to take them out, but can't remember which video.

    @eezybeezy, FYI the title should be rounded off the nut. Stripping the nut means the threads inside the nut were damaged, which wasn't the case.
