Max EV range on 2017 and 2018 Prime

Our 2018 Prius PHV requires 5.8kWh to fully charge. (The Prius PHV is called "Prime" in some countries e.g. North America.) It has driven 44,000km (27,300miles).

The graph shows the power used to charge our battery measured at the outlet when charging at 1.8kW (7.7Amps, 240V). The increase in Battery Charge is calculated by subtracting the starting % from the final % (usually 100%). The battery charge % was read from the car's info screen. The 5 red data points show the amount of power delivered when fast charging using CHAdeMO at about 17kW (70Amps) to 80%, which I understand is not available in North American Prius Prime models. (Three regression lines of varying types are also shown, which can be ignored for this discussion.) The graph shows that 5.8kWh is required from 0% to 100%.

So, I think your battery is still doing OK considering its age and distance travelled. (I assume you meant your battery requires 5.5kWh (not "kW") of energy to charge fully.)

 

yep, especially if it gets 100miles to a full charge in less than 1 hour...

 

When you have a kit to sell for $10K to do that, let me know. I will buy... Or, NOT. Come to think of it, I don't own a PP anymore. It was cheaper to switch three PPs and now to Escape PHEV every year or two than to replace the degraded traction battery. LOL

 

issa why I'm using new batteries, the newer technology batteries IMO are more superior. as time goes on the batteries get more powerful and smaller.

to think I was dead set on using the cells from the battery in the rav4 ev @ 41kWh... now the new bz4x has a 71.4kWh that's significantly lighter and smaller.

Be careful that rodents don’t nest over the battery and munch on the cables. Toyota currently has no replacement cables available, and another Prime owner reports that the insurance company, as a fix, is replacing the battery and cables, at a cost of $500 (the deductible). Gee, it would be a shame to have that happen (cough, cough)!

You keep talking about replacing your prime battery as if you have done so.
It can be confusing to someone like the op or someone tuning into this thread

I bought my '17 Prime new. When it was new I was seeing 31 to 34 EV miles, but only when we had mild temperatures. During the hot summers or cold winters I was seeing around 28 miles of EV range. Six years later and with 31,000 miles on the odometer, lately I've been getting 26 or 27 miles of EV range, then again, it has been a damn hot summer, so it will be interesting to see if its EV range increases a bit this Fall. Even if its EV ranges doesn't increase this Fall, I can't complain. Toyota rated this car for 25miles of EV range.

 

BEV range decreases with speed.

 

Mine (also a 2017 but with 87k miles) still has a range of 25 to 26 miles. Dr Prius gave me a capacity left of 101% lol

 

All Primes in the US should be under battery warranty if under the mileage.
The beauty of it is it can go to 10 miles of range in 15-20 years and it is still a fully functioning vehicle, just need to visit a charge point more often, not even that more often. So it goes to half range, it takes half as long to charge. Glass half full.
Full ev is a different story.

 

Except when I can't go to work without it turning on its engine. Although it's not the case, yet.

 

You can still go to work though even if half way there the engine turns on. It still can go anywhere just the same as before. When a full ev can go less than 100 miles from original 200, it dampens the usability. In some way it’s good if the engine turns on more often.

I don't want to burn fuel unless absolutely necessary. But a anyway, with all the road salt they add to the road here, the thing will be more rust than metal in 25 years anyway...

 

these cars don't lose much range over time. most in the first two years if any
