Figuring cost to charge my Prime

depends on your electric bill. if it's always one rate, divide the total bill by the kwh used to figure kwh cost. then multiply by about 12 to fill the battery from the hybrid level to full.

 

I have two PHEV. A Rav4 and a Prius Prime. So far this month, the Chargepoint app says I have charged 107 miles and have spent $6. That is a ballpark figure though, we always get more EV miles than the app says.

Using the supplied Level 1 120v charger on a 15Amp circuit, with the car charge setting changed from 8A to "Maximum" which draws 12A, a full charge from 0% to 100% will draw roughly 13.6 kWh from the wall for a cost of C$1

How many miles / kilometers you will get for that depends on many factors. If you like to feel the power you may only get 6km per kWh for a range of 64 km. If you actively try to maximize your range, you may get 73 km out of a full charge. I am retired and average 24 miles 39km each day, and average 4.3 mi/kWh 6.9 km/kWh. If I lived in Sudbury Ontario, I would expect my monthly electric bill to rise by $C15 for 30 days of roughly 50% battery usage.

If you all use kWh/100km (totally inverted logic for my brain):
6 km / kWh == 16.7 kWh / 100km (not good, not bad, EPA-ish)
6.9 km / kWh == 14.5 kWh / 100km (good)

6.9 km / kWh * 10.6 kWh EV Mode Capacity = 73 km range
6.0 km / kWh * 10.6 kWh EV Mode Capacity = 64 km range
Nothing to it that way..

 

Not for home but whether to charge or to pump.

 

For my 2023 Prius Prime XSE, driving averages 4.3 mi/kWh (battery) resulting in 3.3 mi/kWh (wall level 1 charging at home) at US$0.161 per kWh, (US$0.049/mile) and averaging 44.7 MPG, my break-even point is $2.18 per gallon.

Gas was US$3.53 yesterday by me, giving a cost of US$0.079 per mile, so EV mode saves 3 cents per mile, or roughly US$1.37 per "electric fill-up".

I've driven 2173 miles in 2 months owning the car, 49% of those miles in EV mode - so buying a $40k car saved $32 so far ... only 1.3 million miles to go till break even.

Charge or pump , well it depends where you live , In Québec the quick answer is NEVER PUMP .To be attractive to use gas, , the price must be lower, Here are some comparaison: when I charge at home, gas price has to be below $1.16 USD/Gallon , when I charge on a public charger, gas price has to be below $3.79USD/Gallon ...actual price of gas is $4.95USD/Gallon . Prices are converted from Litre to Us gallon and $CDN to $USD, electricity here is approx $0.07USD / KW
Additionnal Note :L2 public charger rates are based on time (minutes) not on KW/h, thus since the Prime has an onboard 3.6KW charger it's a slow process .I wish that Toyota had choosen a 7.2KW charger ,that would reduce the time by 50%

 

It added $20 USD a month to my electricity bill, but removed at least 1.5 fill-ups to my gas tab. Paying $0.135.KwH; recharging every day and burning through my stored EV capacity everyday. Your gen5 battery is a bit larger, but I believe your paying half of what I'm paying in Canada - but your also buying gasoline by the liter (3.8L/gal) up there. Your still banking a lot of money, if you can charge at home or free.

You'll need to make a few minor adjust to MarineRay's chart, to fit your gen5.

 

OP didn’t ask anything about charge or pump - only asked what it will cost them when charging at home in SudburyOntario, and apparently did not know their electric rate.

Best guess CAD$1 a total electric “fill-up”

 

The chart includes Gen 5.

 

The question is flawed in many ways. ie: if his round trip commute is less than 40 miles; he's not going to need a full charge - therefore lower electricity cost. That's why I offered up solid examples of what to expect. Without more information, everything is just a guess.

The SE gets 44 miles in EV mode before switching to gas - more if your on city streets rather than highway driving. Don't know what that converts to in kilometers, and don't feel like doing the math right now..

I have a kill-a-watt and do have my charger plugged into it. My goal (we'll see how well I do) is to note the KWh every month right around billing time so I'll know how many KWh were for the car and how many for the rest of the house. Interpreting my power bill with its dozen or so line items is a bit of a black art, but I think I've sorted out which items are demand based and which are fixed and for me it looks to be about $0.13/KWh. I'll do the spreadsheet for fun, but from Marine Ray's table above that comes out to an equivalent of $2/gal.

2/3.8= 0.53 cents per liter equivalent. So if gas dips below 0.53/liter - it's more economical to run gas. Those calculations are still in mpg NOT Km/L.

The Saudi’s are cutting OPEC oil production for the foreseeable future, and the current administration is apparently not renewing over 13 million acres of potential drilling sites here in the US of A. One can assume astronomical historically high gas prices to follow. Plugging in our Primes should be much more economical than the latter while we tough out this mess to come.

 

Don't rely on the app to accurately display the amount of kWh it takes to charge the battery. I charged mine up last night and the app said 3.296 kWh while my PN2500 Electric Use Monitor said 7.040 kWh which equates to about $0.41 (based on cost of $0.0595/kWh)

I feel your pain - That's Pacific Gas and Electric territory. Didn't you put in a solar array?

But they will throw back a few crumbs, if you switch to a BEV
