    excellent diagram RJ. many thx for posting that! it is a bit more elaborate than the original TSB I saw and has the accommodation for the two mystery plants for each model-type. This somewhat deepens the plot though because those plants 0 and 1 unit numbers must not relate to each other. And that means Toyota would have made >1 million units total for that year (if each car gets unit 1 incrementally). So that high of a number also seems a bit improbable. did this document come from a newer TSB on the issue?

    I believe each model’s sequence number is cumulative over the years per plant. Otherwise they could not tell you which vin at a plant initiated a fix.

    Global cumulative Prius liftback sales reached the milestone 1 million vehicle mark in May 2008,[7] 2 million in September 2010,[8]and passed the 3 million mark in June 2013.[9] Cumulative sales of one million were achieved in the U.S. by early April 2011,[10] and Japan reached the 1 million mark in August 2011.[11] As of September 2022, the Prius ranked as the world's top selling hybrid car with 5 million units sold.[12]

    In 2011, Toyota expanded the Prius family to include the Prius v, an MPV, and the Prius c, a subcompact hatchback. The production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid was released in 2012. The second generation of the plug-in variant, the Prius Prime, was released in the U.S. in November 2016.[13] The Prime achieved the highest miles per gallon equivalent(MPGe) rating in all-electric mode of any vehicle rated by EPA with an internal combustion engine.[14][15] Global sales of the Prius c variant passed the one million mark during the first half of 2015.[16]

    The Prius family totaled global cumulative sales of 6.1 million units in January 2017, representing 61% of the 10 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota since 1997.[17]

    I can corroborate this above statement that unit numbers increment up each year from where they left off in a prior year, rather than start from zero. Based on an internet search, here is a 2015 VIN from a standard prius, which is currently listed on an internet site for sale:

    JTDKN3DU1F0420383

    F = 2015
    0 = the zero factory in japan
    420383 = unit number, cumulative from all prior years of prius builds at that factory.

    the reason I suspect this, is that from the above 2014 TSB advisory (starting the new rings/pistons):

    the VIN JTDKN3DU#E0358779 is a later 2014 VIN but is 358779, so that kinds of feeds into to a bit higher 2015 VIN of 420383, which is from the same factory "0".

    so once again RJ, thanks for this extra info! this was a great discussion and sharing of info!
