2023 Prius Ltd Awd MPG

    Well this is depressing news. 40.6 mpg? I better average 48 mpg or I will be very upset.

    The AWD does drop the EPA rating about 5%. Your tires are also still new. That fleet car had 3500 miles. Rolling resistance drops as tires wear, and for the EPA test, they are closer to 4000 miles of wear than 1000. Check the tire pressure.

    How was your efficiency in your last car? What did you get in comparison to the EPA rating? That'll give you an idea of whether the new Prius is doing poorly.

    my 2014 model got around 47, or a bit higher or lower depending on how much (hilly) parkway driving I was doing. I certainly don't remember any Wth moments from when I first owned it, but it was almost ten years ago. I'll just have to take your word for it and hope that it improves over time.

    fwiw, I switched the mpg display from Trip to Tank, and for the current tank it's showing 38.6. It's kinda wild how low the figures I've been getting are. I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

    The majority of their route was 45-55MPH. That is a sweet spot for this car I think. Even though they were flooring it from every stop, I'm confident that a lot of their trip was in EV, cruising down hills and such.

    There's a strange dynamic with this new generation with respect to maximizing MPGs. There's a best way to drive it hard, and a best way to drive it soft. I have been totally surprised at times taking it for some "driving enjoyment" trips, to come back and have the MPGs reading in the 70's. I have also been surprised to achieve mid 50's with normal driving and a mixture of highway/city.

    One thing is for sure, short trips are going to give you abysmal numbers. The longer you drive, the better your MPG should be (up to a point), when you are in the city. Highway driving has too many variables.

    Given the current topic, I’m gonna drop in here with my average with the XLE AWD on my current tank of gas so far:

    This is with a blend of city and highway driving. I work from home and don’t have a commute, so a lot of this is cruising around town where I can utilize EV mode or on country backroads where I don’t go over 60 MPH, but there’s been a few highway-heavy trips in there, too. This has been the best average I’ve seen so far; other averages per tank have been between 47-50 MPG.

    You should probably switch the meter to tank average. You currently have it on total average. Which I assume it’s for all tank averages since it has been driven. Unless it’s been reset every time.

    You’re welcome. No problem! Lol I was just going to post and ask wouldn’t you rather just set the meter to tank average and keep the total average data intact instead of having 2 of the same data. Just thought it made more sense, especially since tank average data resets automatically when you fill up. (y)

    So far, this is my new personal best: 20230721_202050.jpg

    I managed to maintain this up until today when I had to load up and rush over to run a karaoke gig in an area with more hilly terrain, which dropped my average by 1-2mpg.

    The variation is kinda crazy though. I had to super carefully manage how I drive to hit 47.5, and if I just drive like a normal person it can easily tank the mileage. That said, if I can maintain an average of around 45, given how the terrain is out here, I'll be pretty happy.

    Temps look good. I've noticed super hot temps really affect my MPGs from AC. What's your tire pressure? And are you using the Eco driving scoring tool? What are you normally scoring after acceleration? After deceleration?

    Tires were around the stock 35 last I checked.

    The area I live in is around halfway between the Appalachias and the flatter terrain of the midwest. The terrain here is mostly a mess of hills and ridges, and the roads generally traverse the ridgelines, so there's a lot of up-and-down driving which means I'll never average the rated 49. My daily commute is about ~13 minutes, mostly on a single road, with a speed limit of 55mph.

    The 47.5 is like, doing my best to get max eco scores (~90 seems to be the most that's really practical on my commute, though I've reached 95 once or twice) or at least doing my best to drive in a way that I've observed seems to improve mileage. It's kinda really annoying to keep up, though, especially when you're sharing the road with other cars and don't really want to feel like a jerk being needlessly slow just for mileage, and don't want to be constantly looking down at the eco score to make sure you're not breaking past the white bar.

    A more realistic figure without tryharding for mileage, when I completely ignore the eco score and just drive how I'd drive any other car, is closer to 43~45 ish.

    In the worst case, driving on the ~35 minute stretch of parkway to the east, through more/bigger hills, with a 70mph speed limit, gets about 38MPG. This seems consistent; I took a trip there today immediately after filling up my tank in town and it was showing 38.2 when I got back to town after the trip. I don't really know how it would be possible to improve this figure.

    tl;dr if you live in a hilly rural area like mine:
    high-speed parkway: 38~40mpg
    normal main-road driving: 43~45mpg
    main-road tryhard: 46~47mpg

    So I have a 2023 LMTD AWD,19” rims, I have 3700 miles on it and only getting 36mpg. Not sure what I could be doing wrong it’s set on EV/economy mode? I had a 2010 Prius since it was new and it was still getting over 40 MPG. Thoughts?

    I’m here to see the responses to your post. I will be very upset if I only get 36 mpg when I purchase my XLE AWD. Supposedly the glass roof adds some weight but still shouldn’t cause such a decrease in fuel economy.

    A lot variables go into what one achieves for MPG. The 19" wheels play a role as well as the additional 300 pounds in weight between 2023 and 2010. Driving style and environment play a big role. I have never owned a Prius before but I wonder if due to the difference in HP, some may drive it more aggressively than their previous rides.

    I'm bouncing around 45-50mpg with mine. Closer to 45-46 in town during very short trips(<2mi) and lots of stop and go(stop signs, turns, etc.). Closer to 50 when driving slower highway speeds(55-60mph). Dropping back to 45-47 at higher highway speeds(65-80mph).

    Very true , the gain in weight , wheel size , does play a role ,greater mass means greater inertia to overcome .
