2023 LE fwd mpg, what are you getting?

No Prime brother. Just good ol' vanilla HEV LE.

And I haven't even BEGUN to see the top of the hypermilin' mountain. G5's have major fuel sippin' potential!

 

Took a joyride the other evening. I did some hard corning and fairly aggressive acceleration.

Around 100f index. AC was running solid. My dog was with me so I had to manually crank the fan a bit as she rides in the back. Still set at 75F though. I think lower/colder temps harm MPGs more than higher fan rates.

I was also able to crank the temp up to 77F the other day and be perfectly comfortable (riding alone). If it's hot outside and the sun is shining, the AC is never gonna shut off. With a couple vents blowing right at your face and chest, 77 just may do it. It did for me and I don't like to sweat.

At night though, you might have to crank the fan as the AC will automatically run lower. Actual 77F in a car would not be comfortable without a strong breeze IMO.

This car gets incredible gas mileage!

I can't wait for cooler temps in the fall. Then we'll see how far I can get into the 100's on trips.

 

Just did my 3rd fill up today. Looks like Toyota’s calculations are still slightly optimistic.

 

That's actually not bad considering most auto manufacturer's mpg readouts are optimistic. Worse case being Ford.

1st fill-up. Mixed City Highway. 70-90 degrees. Math works out to 59.6 mpg.

 

Only off by a little more than 1% which can be accounted for by variations in refueling pumps. That's going to irritate somebody on here.

When getting super anal with mpg tracking, it's recommended to use the exact same pump every time, lock the trigger on the slowest setting, and stop fueling after the first auto-shutoff of the pump.

I'm sitting at about 62 MPGs on my tank average, way down from almost 66, because I ran my car for 2.5 hrs last week, parked and idling with the AC on for my pup. That's not hypermiling best practices I don't think lol.

Got some nice little trips in the other day. We had a reprieve from the heat, so I was able to go AC free.



Pegged this one coming home from the carwash. Battery wasn't highly charged or anything. Hit several stoplights too. Here's what's crazy, I had the AC on because I didn't want to roll the windows down and have them smear right after the wash. It was cooler outside so perhaps the AC wasn't as heavy of a burden.



Here's the tank average. Way down from the other day when I had to idle for hours with the AC on.

When I have a good clean tank run with no idling or crazy 100f+ temps, I'll get 700 miles. I'm certain of it. And this girl isn't even broken in yet.

 

My car can display only trip average, anyone can tell me how I can set to show the tank average or total average? I know we can customize this as shown in the manual.

 

go to settings tab> meter settings> go to the leaf icon> fuel economy

 

Thanks for replying to my post and it's working now. I'm little surprised to find that even though most of the miles I drove I got around 70 mpg but the tank averaged only 56 mpg. Right now it's less than half of my first tank, I'll see when I fill the tank.

When the DTE reads zero, you've got about 9.5 gallons used.

My old 2020 Prime is stuck on 999.9 mpg for six weeks. It’s more than that though. I finally had to run the engine out of guilt. So quiet on engine too, even being off for six weeks. I wonder what’s wrong with the head gasket and exhaust heater tube.
I wonder how I can play music in it, all I have are some cd’s and cassette tapes.

 

No it's not. Miles driven divided by fuel replaced is.

 

Car computers use arithmetic to calculate mpg too. Pump calculation I did for many years like a lot of people have. Not very reliable imo except over thousands of miles and many fill ups, and as an average number. I wonder if in summer pump calc is lower and in winter higher due to gasoline expansion/ contraction. Don’t use pump calc anymore, just the very precise car computer calculated result. Even my 2003 Ford said in writing use the computer over manual pump calc. No it wasn’t a plot.
Toyota looks like they did it again with the 2023, amazing numbers, and a slick looking car.

 

I go to the same pump, and always fill at the slowest locked position. I sure hope the pump is accurate otherwise..... there's a lot more problems than just MPG calculations.

Seasonality definitely matters as there's less energy in the fuel in the winter.

 

This is what DTE is, and unlike owner estimates, it is accurate and honest.

 

The speedometer is also very accurate. It can legally be off the actual speed by almost 5%. The difference between the lifetime display of the Outback, and the tank calculate average is over 5%. The display is high, and that is how it's been for most models.

Is it? It just as easily be whatever the current MPG value is times volume added. Is that average for the tank, lifetime, or just the trip before the fill up?

In the case of a PHEV, is the DTE value including miles driven in EV mode in the calculation.

The car's display can be accurate, but how the numbers displayed are rendered is in a black box to the consumer.
