Is there any reason I should get aftermarket brake rotors vs the oem ones?

What about the brake pads, are ceramic pads preferable over oem ones?

You know a lot of that stuff is personal issues really The brakes on my '04 I'm pretty sure are not ceramic per se they were whatever was going on and '04 with Toyota I can't remember what their exact compound technology was in the brake pads same with the brake rotors pretty straightforward nothing real fancy when I replaced mine I bought cross drilled slotted coated nonsense that are still silver after 3 years here in North Carolina in the rain in the humidity unlike the Toyota ones which were rusty pretty quickly not that that matters they worked fine all those years The slotted coated things were cheaper than the Toyota dealers rotors or rear drums so I bought aftermarket obviously pads are the same way I wouldn't say the dealers are the top rated or the best but they're certainly very good I think they're still a semi-expensive I bought Wagner's top of the line burgundy label colored whatever they are now I can't remember SRS or something no issues no problems almost half of dealer price with my discount.

The little job shop near me sells Federated and those have turned out to be nice rotors for the rear, with a coating on the hat part where they'd want to rust, for a good deal less money than Toyota's, and round and flat enough to suit me.

Yeah, you can get quality aftermarket for pretty darn cheap. It was around $140 to do all my pads and rotors using Raybestos pads and Power Stop rotors (got some stuff wholesale). I like the coated ones as well since they don't look like crap immediately.

I have power stops on a Prius right now X drilled and slotted they were just as cheap as the regular one so what the hell It's only a one-time deal for me on this Prius by the time it comes up again it should be long gone by right.

I've slapped pads on several twos and threes without any issues at all No warpage no grabbing no funny business I just put new ones on mine because they're cheap and I'm trying to take the car to 666 what the heck nothing that broke the bank or even put a crack in it so might as well My generation two was also pretty questionable driven to almost 200,000 miles with nothing done to it except consumables.

Never heard of that company maybe Federal like federal mogul hell I don't know I usually figure with rotors you can't really screw that up You couldn't '80s I guess there was some manufacturing problems but now today it seems even places like Poland and Turkey in India that turn these things out seem to do a bang up job.

Buy what you are comfortable with.

If you don't like risks and don't mind paying more for quality, then go Toyota OEM.

If you want to pay less, but is willing to risk possible lower quality or fitment issues then go aftermarket.

That being said. I tried buying what is reviewed as better quality aftermarket. The reason I went aftermarket was because I had a family member that bought a large shipment and I was able to set some aftermarket parts with free shipping. I am currently using Centric Premium rotors with Wagner thermoquiet ceramic brake pads. I honestly don't know if the aftermarket was better or worse as the original OEM brake pads are semi-metallic (which has better stopping power material, but should wear faster).

Because the car is mostly using electrical power generation for braking there's very little need for better performance. However, if you're a rural mail carrier and spend too much time driving under 6mph where it's 100% mechanical brakes then the system is undersized and will wear out quickly, which justifies an upgrade to more heavy duty discs and pads, if that's even possible.

Very cool so the rotors you bought from federated are their house brand? I see they carry lots of brands including KYB etc.?

I walked into my local job shop and got them handed to me across the counter.

The sign on their building has a Federated logo in the corner.

I thought we weren't allowed to do that and Amazon made it so we have to wait at home for the truck to deliver it?

The Centric-branded ones have worked for me on other Japanese cars, but I strongly suggest you stick to their best version.

You want the coated GCX series with the 320-xxxxx part number. The ones with the 120.xxxxx part numbers don't last long and the 121.xxxxx versions are just cheap junk.

So y'all using mag mounts and dial.indicators to check runout . Interesting I have a locker full of LS Starrett gauges indicators mag mounts and even a surface plate and vee blocks. Never thought they'd be used again.

On any vehicle with ABS, there is little to no need for "better brake performance" with a street vehicle
because it will just activate the ABS a few micro-seconds sooner.
The mail carrier is a good example of a "maybe" though.
