    Timing cover work was done from Toyota, so it looks like it was replaced or lightly cleaned by Dealer

    Gen2 and 3 are good for brake booster and hv battery business.
    Gen3 is good for engine business.

    Unfortunately, with the body of these units being aluminum castings, I am not sure that a rebuild will be as good as a brand new unit; the brand new unit having an iffy and hard to predict projected service life.

    Only Toyota has the data on the failure rate of these units, and they hold that information closely as a trade secret.

    My dad, a I am are aerospace service and reliability engineers. The issue might not be the seals but the micro crystalline structure of of the surface of the aluminum castings. It's likely the boundary layer of the molten aluminum alloy as it contacts itself as the liquid flows together.

    So, some fail within a very short service life' while others almost never fail in service.

    Basically, the life of these units depends on "the luck of the draw."

    Sooooooo, someone sends you the unit, you replace the seals, and charge?????????
    $10? $100? $1000? $10,000????
    And if they don't pay, you keep it?
    You need a price first.
    And what kind of warranty?
    Do you resurface the aluminum the seals go on?

    As much "fun" as it it to get to it and replace it, it would be smarter to get a new
    one from Toyota, with a warranty. Less likely to have a problem.

    It means they figured out how to rebuild a gen3 brake booster which has not been done before. It seems pricing has not been set, eg this is a breaking story.

    Given a good price and a warranty, a lot of us would go for it assuming we have the time to wait. Clearly they are trying to avoid firmware differences which could occur if they sold rebuilt cores.

    One of those situations where a person has to strike a balance between fostering credibility and maximizing profit.

    There is a lot of history on PriusChat of various issues with the car being successfully addressed by members who are quite open about their materials, methods, findings, and remediation approach. Fer instance, back in the day, there was a member or two who would rebuild Gen 1 go pedal sensors, and shared openly about the process. If I had needed a go pedal fixed, I'd have been pretty comfortable sending it to one of them.

    At the other extreme, sometimes a person works out a way to rebuild something and is tempted instead to maximize profit potential by disclosing none of that, just saying "cracked the code" and putting those units up for sale. Different people will view that differently, but it would be easier to attract my business by taking at least a further step or two in the direction of disclosing methods to scrutiny.

    I'm not saying it has to be all altruism or all profit; there's a whole range where a good balance might be struck.
